• SARS-CoV-2 antigen tests are lateral flow immunoassays performed by accredited laboratories on respiratory secretions (nasopharyngeal/nasal) to detect the presence of specific viral antigens. A positive result implies current infection.
• The sensitivity of these devices depends on the circumstances in which they are used and they perform best when used in symptomatic individuals during early stages of infection when there are high viral loads. A negative result may occur if the test is used in asymptomatically infected individuals, or if it is done too late after infection when the viral load in the sample is low.
• If a rapid antigen test result is inconsistent with the clinical presentation, a SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR, the current accepted standard diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2 infection should then be done within 48 hours of the antigen test.
