Africa.
Coke Studio season 1 & 2 the format development and pre-prod began in 2014 and the team concluded the 2nd season in 2016.
Leon was the drive behind the format, the musical collaborations and directing the series plus writing the presenter scripts and VO script plus the set look and feel and the shows graphics. The vision from pre-prod to post production was in Leon's hands. The show won a SAFTA for best music show in South Africa.
Leon created as an Insert Director for John de Mol Produkties working predominately for all the commercial broadcasters. Later John de Mol became Endemol. Leon left for Endemol South Africa in 2000
I filmed the various artists who had come to Box studios to jam for 7 days, among them were the Propeller Heads, Deep Forest, Iggy Pop & Johnny Depp, Papa Wemba, Water Boys, Joe Strummer The Clash and a host of others. I filmed their collaborations and creative passion
We traveled from Egypt to South Africa, I filmed stories en-route and edited them. I would also venture out and research stories that would compliment our content
Dutch acclaimed documentary maker Saskia Vredeveld filmed across the Western Cape after the 1994 elections, she would drop off the footage with me. I would sift through the footage finding the narrative, the hooks and then cut an offline. The offline were then sent to Amsterdam after Saskia approved them for the online and broadcast.
Leon's internship as an editor started at the Dutch News, however they allowed him to take on freelance directing jobs. He eventually returned after his internship as a Freelance editor until he started directing bigger projects and cutting offline
Leon directed inserts for Forza the Dutch Youth programme and salvaged many inserts as a troubleshooting offline editor
Ossewa Rock was Leon's first documentary for a National broadcaster in the Netherlands. The crew followed Johannes Kerkorrel and the Gereformeerde Blues band throughout South Africa as they delivered their anti-nationalism/racism during the violent days of apartheid.
Leon loves hiking, his body needs to move for his mind to settle, and he thrives on the unexpected, adventure, and the allure of taking a wrong turn. He's drawn to new visuals and fragrances, and science gives him an absolute buzz, especially when it disrupts the common denominator. Leon enjoys popping the paradigm and relishes the rush of creating music, filming, and uncovering core narratives, all while embracing emotions in flow mode. He revels in the smell of grass and trees, observing life in its various forms, from animals to insects to humans, and even the underwater world. Above all, Leon admires honesty and loyalty in others.
