Community Service Speech-Language Therapist
Eastern Cape Department of Health
01.2025 - Current
As the sole Speech-Language Therapist at a district hospital, I independently manage the delivery of comprehensive services across departments, including general wards (male and female), maternity, paediatric, and outpatient clinics. I work with both paediatric and adult populations, providing assessment and intervention for a wide range of communication and swallowing disorders.
Paediatric cases include children with autism spectrum disorder, global developmental delays, low birth weight, and premature infants with feeding difficulties.
Adult caseload consists mainly of patients with stroke-related conditions such as aphasia, apraxia of speech, dysarthria, and dysphagia.
I also conduct rural outreach visits, ensuring continued service access for underserved communities.
Responsible for all administrative functions, including appointment scheduling, patient records, report writing, monthly statistics, and resource procurement within hospital budget constraints.
This role requires strong clinical judgement, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work independently in a resource-limited setting while contributing meaningfully to patient outcomes.
