TALFALAH PRIMARY SCHOOL
Western Cape

Deputy Principal
10.2008 - 12.2013

Job overview

  • At this institution I acquired Senior Management Skills. I learnt to engage stakeholders, staff and the parent community. I had an avid rapport with staff and community and served as principal in the absence of the principal. As Deputy Principal I mentored, initiated and provided BOTH leadership and support to my subordinates. During this time I also completed the Advanced Certificate in School Leadership at UCT for Principals and Deputy Principals. This programme developed my financial management skills, curriculum /moderation and assessment management as well as school governance and policy analysis. This bolstered my expertise as senior manager. Curriculum Management: As the Deputy Principal, I was responsible for curriculum planning and co-ordination as well as examination and assessment management. One of the important aspects for me was always the integration of subjects in order for learners to develop holistically. Improvement plans Litnum improvement plans and the implementation thereof is one of my core skills. On receipt of the the Systemic Results, I establish a team that is responsible for identifying and analysing the problem areas. An appropriate LITNUM strategy. Policies and policy making often facilitated the development of policies, for example the school’s Code of Conduct , the school’s Homework Policy and Detention Policy. Examinations I also initiated a more streamlined, seamless examination system. An example of this was that ALL admin for exams are facilitated are completed before hand. During this time I ensured that backing boards(learners’ desks are not smooth and are often broken) for learners are laminated which included our school’s exam rules...Something which was absent before. As IQMS Co-ordinator, I further developed my problem solving skill by generating a the School Developmental Plan from educators Q4’s Personal Growth Forms. I am Fully CAPS trained from Grades 4-12. I have a very comprehensive idea of the CAPS and Assessment requirements and I recognise that fact that overburdened educators really appreciate the two -week planning that I can provide( I provide educators with CAPS aligned assessment programmes). SPMDS I was also responsible for the performance of support staff as well as Individual Support Plan.
  • My teaching duties included teaching in the Inter-Sen Phase (Grade 4-7). Some of these included teaching all subjects to my registered class. My administrative duties included HCLMS, IQMS , SPMDS and WSE Co-ordinator. I also managed discipline in that I was Head of Discipline. Curriculum and Assessment. One of my first projects at Talfalah Primary School was Whole School Evaluation in 2009 with my being the one who had interfaced with the WCED in my capacity as WSE Co-ordinator. I was responsible for Timetabling in Inter-Sen Phase and I managed the Foundation Phase in a supervisory capacity. SBST I was an active member on the SBST ensuring that holistic academic performance of under performing learners was archived, recorded and that the necessary academic support was rendered for each learner on remedial support and intervention. During this time I regularly I mentored inexperienced , novice teachers whilst making sure that they kept up with curriculum delivery. Internal moderation of learner workbooks, lesson plan implementation, the effective use of the DBE workbooks and formal assessment tasks. I assisted teachers and checked their quarterly schedules and also consulted with colleagues to identify areas for development for improvement plans(LITNUM STRATEGY). I assist educators with Promotion and Progression and issue moderation reports . As a Senior Manager I make recommendations to the principal with regard to Learning and Teaching Support Material. As Curriculum Head, I regularly inform colleagues of new curriculum developments and see that it is implemented. Correspondence Often wrote the school’s correspondence. I am conversant in Afrikaans (BOTH read and write) and fully conversant in English. Written communication includes letters, emails and other official correspondence. Finances While I was not on the Finance Committee, I am fully acquainted with budget processes and the administration of school finances ranging from the collection of school funds, fund raising, compilation of Q43’s and the BUDGET process as well as procurement.
  • As the WSE and IQMS Co-ordinator , I was lauded by the Educational District to mentor other schools in the area with the drawing up of their SIPs.
  • Established a Parent Outreach Programme in conjunction with Auxiliary Social Workers via the now non-existent “Self Help Manenberg” in the Manenberg area. Because I was Head of Discipline at school, I recognised the fact that many of our learners’ behavioural problems originated from home and that parents were unable to cope. I therefore established the Parent Outreach and support programme in order to assist parents with Positive Parenting Skills. I also initiated the first Mother’s Day Programme at school.
  • I initiated IFTAAR EVENING OUTREACH where the school provided meals for the poor and indigent in the Manenberg during the Holy month of Ramadaan. I started this project in 2008 when I was appointed and the school has continued with this social upliftment programme up to and including 2019. IQMS/SIP During my tenure at Talfalah Primary School, our school was identified as a top performing school not only for academics but also for our comprehensively compiled SIP.
