Metallurgist trainee P1/P2

Waterval Smelter, Anglo American Platinum
10.2020 - 09.2021
  • Project completed Ladle usage and cost management – On the 28/10/2020 one of the ladles burned through resulting in loss of the containment of molten material, some of the contributing factors into the refractory failure were related to the quality of repairs, casting and the curing of the ladle
  • The main objective is to quantify the benefits of outsourcing the ladle refractory repairs
  • This can be achieved by recording consumables used, comparing number of taps done by outsourced ladles and onsite ladles
  • Monitoring curing (Amount of Liquefied Petroleum Gas used per ladle) and curing pattern curve Actual versus planned
  • Linear Variable Displacement Transducers (LVDTs) - are sensors installed and commissioned on the furnace as a secondary means of measuring the movement of the binding system buckstays
  • When this movement is compared to an earlier reference point, the growth of the furnace can be determined
  • The aim of project was to replace manual laser measurements that are taken once a day since the LVDTs represents frequent and continuous movement of the buckstay.
  • Streamlined laboratory procedures by implementing modern analytical equipment, enhancing precision and accuracy in results reporting.
