In the various stages of my training and work history in O&G, I have practiced in the public (1999-2017) and private health sectors (2017-current) in South Africa. In the public sector, I have worked at primary, secondary and tertiary level hospitals with extensive experience in teaching and training medical students, interns, medical officers, registrars as well as midwives. From 2017 up until now, I have run my own private Obstetric & Gynaecology practice in Cape Town, South Africa which serves both low and high risk pregnancies. I have a special interest in cervical cancer prevention (colposcopy), family planning and menopause.
- consultant (gynaecology/labour ward and high risk obstetric antenatal ward rounds, supervising all theatre lists, gynaecology and obstetric outpatient clinics, labour ward and emergency gynaecology calls)
- as part of the district obstetric team – teaching and training of midwives in the midwife obstetric units under the Metro West District of Cape Town
- lectured to medical students 3rd-6th year as well as bedside teaching
- ran the family planning clinic (all methods offered) including counselling of high risk patients
- ran a perinatal loss clinic for follow-up & counselling of women/families that have suffered a stillbirth or a neonatal death
- in charge of monthly perinatal audit meetings including statistics, presentations & feedback to clinic staff
- involved with ESMOE (Essential Steps in the management of Obstetric Emergencies) training for the Metro West district midwives, interns & medical officers
- taught & trained registrars in laparascopy, hysteroscopy & colposcopy (1-2 colposcopy clinics per week at NSH)
- consultant (including theatre lists, gynaecology and obstetric outpatient clinics, labour ward and emergency gynaecology calls)
- rendered assistance in the Obstetric critical care unit and special care clinics (high risk obstetrics)
- visits to midwife obstetric units – teaching and training of midwives on the educational afternoons
- lecturing to under- and postgraduate students
- co-ordinated teaching program for FCOG Part I candidates
- assisted the Assocation for Voluntary Sterilisation SA with laparoscopic sterilizations at the day hospitals
- involved with the ESMOE training program for interns, Medical Officers & Midwives
- rotated through 4 general gynaecology firms
- conducted 1 general gynaecology clinic/week (responsible for seeing all the new patients, advising medical officers/interns on management of follow-up patients, doing gynae scans on both new and follow-up patients as well as scanning and counselling patients requesting terminations of pregnancy)
- contacting and preparing patients for the pre-op ward round
- operating (together with a consultant/intern) on 1 elective gynae list/week
- 1-2 X 24hour gynae calls/week.
- 1 colposcopy clinic with an Oncology consultant
- After hours on-call duties included running the Obstetric High Care Unit.
- Involved with student teaching & exams and intern training
- 3mnthly rotations through the ffg. sub- specialities :
(a) Gynae Oncology (3 follow-up clinics/week, 1-2 elective lists/wk, preparing patients for weekly staging meetings and doing 1 outreach follow-up clinic/mnth) (b) Urogynaeclogy (1 outpatient clinic/wk, 2 theatre lists/mnth & 1 urodynamic study clinic/wk)
(c) Family Planning (2 clinics/wk, 1 elective laparascopic sterilisation list/wk).
(d) Endogynae rotation (scanned patients on ovulation induction agents for IUI, did HSG’s, assisted on the Infertility/Endogynae list (1/wk), responsible for seeing new & follow-up patients at 1 Endogynae clinic/wk, did outpatient hysteroscopy clinic/wk)
- rotated through 4 obstetric firms
- was the only obstetric registrar on a 24hr labour ward shift once/wk & 2 weekends/month Responsibilities included managing all the patients in the labour ward and antenatal wards, doing difficult caesareans sections, teaching the medical officer, intern & students
- ran 1 High risk clinic per week – saw high risk patients, did antenatal dating scans, scans for post-dates pregnancies, placental site etc. Also did external cephalic versions for persistent breech presentation.
- Did a 6week rotation through the obstetric special care unit – sole registrar responsible for high risk patients eg. severe early onset preeclamptic patients qualifying for expectant management, diabetic patients requiring insulin. This involved being on call for the unit for 6weeks and being available for the deliveries of the patients in the unit. Helped feto-maternal team to arrange in-utero transfusions for patients with rhesus disease. Primarily responsible for the diabetic clinic – glucose control and decision re. timing and mode of delivery.
- Did a 3mnth rotation at Karl Bremer and Paarl Hospitals – both level II hospitals in the Western Cape. Worked in their labour ward, high risk obstetric clinic and was involved with student, intern & medical officer teaching.
- Presented at department and interdepartmental academic meetings.
- Did a 3month rotation through surgical ICU
- worked in the labour ward, antenatal and postnatal wards & gynaecology ward as well as in the obstetric & gynaecology clinics (tertiary referral and academic hospital)
- responsible for orientating the new registrars to the O&G department
- responsible for M&M (preparing and presentation of the cases on a monthly basis)
- drawing up of rosters for medical officers in the department
only doctor looking after ~300 adults & ~50 children.
- health & safety training with ship’s crew incl. fire/emergency drills
- education in communities served - primary health care measures, malaria prophylaxis
- restocking ship’s clinic pharmacy
- referrals of patients to hospitals/specialists/optometrists/dentists etc while in various ports along the ship's voyage (East & West Africa - Cape Town to Ghana)
- sole doctor for mission-based projects in Mozambique and Zambia (medical clinics, health checks and dispensing of primary care to children in an orphanage in Beira Mozambique)
- Worked in the general paediatric ward, Neonatal ICU, Paediatric OPD, Casualty/Trauma (after hours), postnatal wards & theatre for emergency Caesarean Sections
Worked in the ffg. areas: general male, general female, paediatrics, obstetrics, malaria & TB wards. After hours work was in OPD, doing emergency caesarean sections & mini-laparotomies for ectopic pregnancies etc. Did elective procedures eg. amputations, skin grafts, circumcisions, female sterilizations as well as giving the anaesthetic for some cases (general & regional anaesthesia)
- Rotated through the ffg. depts (working under supervision) - practical skills and minor procedures eg. intercostal drains, CVPs, Caesarean Sections, Anaesthetics
