In February 2005, I started as a solo practitioner in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Christian Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town. For the past 18 years I've grown my practice to be a service of excellence and dedication, keeping up to date with the latest research by attending weekly seminars and workshops.
Running a successful practice comes with quite a few challenges, but if you stay true to yourself, treat everybody with kindness and respect and offer an up to date service, you'll thrive. Current knowledge is key to my success, therefor I've attended numerous conferences, both national and international, workshops and seminars. I also believe in sharing one's knowledge and thus have appeared in a few television shows, wrote quite a few articles for national magazines and played an important role in educating females about their health and wellbeing.
For many years, I have dedicated my time to antenatal workshops and the training of nurses. I have also enrolled in a few short courses at the University of Cape Town.
I am also regularly involved in Medico-Legal work, where I act as an expert witness in medical cases. It forces me to be objective, do extensive research and to learn from others' mistakes.
Being a leader means dedication to the bigger picture. Decision making, managing staff, HR and payroll all form part of my daily activities. However, if you want the ship to sail smoothly, you need to be the captain of your ship and sometimes it involves difficult decisions and actions.
My passion is to empower people and to help them reach their full potential. My staff embraces my work ethos: Don't bring me problems, bring me solutions.
I value principles and an honest work ethic. I believe in respect, trust, transparency and an open door policy - together we can make it work. But above all, mental and physical wellbeing is everything.
Life is a balancing act and as a mother of two (MENSA) boys, I know it only too well. Hard work is very important, but so is exercise, spiritual fulfillment and outside activities.
I am a Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, currently working at Christian Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town. I've been running my own practice since 2005 and currently employ 10 people.
Apart from seeing to my daily duties as a doctor (which includes daily consultations, delivering of babies, seeing to high risk patients, doing gynaecological surgery), I am also overseeing the runnings of my practice: I'm in charge of HR, payroll and the overall wellbeing of my business.
I also keep abreast of the latest obstetrical and gynaecological updates by weekly attending updates and seminars and going for regular refresher courses.
My passion is to help people and to help them being the best version of themselves. And I believe in teamwork: if all the horses pull in different directions, the cart won't move. If we all work together, the cart will move forward and climb the highest mountains.
Four very hard and utterly rewarding years. I have learnt all the surgical and clinical skills I needed to become a successful Obstetrician. I have also done my first research article, which was published in the South African Medical Journal.
My final period as a medical officer was spent at Tygerberg Hospital. This is when I finally realised I wanted to become an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.
Urology was challenging, but fantastic. I use my knowledge I have gained there on a regular basis.
Apart from managing patients, I've learnt to do important procedures, such as supra-pubic catheter insertions and vasectomies. I also have a much better understanding of the anatomy of the female urinary tract.
Watford was completely different to what I was used to. In South Africa )especially the government institutions) we are dealing with huge number of patients. An antenatal clinic usually sees between 60 to 100 patients.
Being exposed to the NHS was an eye opener. I had to learn to slow down and spend more quality time with the patients. A valuable skill that I still use every day in my practice. I also worked in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department and gained wonderful insights into the field of ultrasound.
Mowbray was the catalyst in my decision to become an Obstetrician. Here I've learnt what it is to work really hard! And that sleep is over-rated!
Mowbray is all about helping women birth safely and I truly honed my skills in this fraternity.
Working with children is a very humbling experience and so rewarding. Here we dealt with an array of peadiatric problems. I found the Burns unit and the Oncology unit to be the most challenging, but emotionally fulfilling, because generally children live from day to day and they taught me to be grateful for all the little things in life.
The first year after qualifying as a doctor, I started working at Groote Schuur Hospital. Your Internship is a very tough year, because you are thrown in the deep end and it is a case of sink or swim!
It was a steep learning curve, but I grew so much as a doctor and as a human being.

During the past 18 years, I have worked extremely hard to build a successful private practice in Cape Town. My patients know that I treat them with integrity, respect and up to date knowledge. It is vital to stay abreast of the latest research and therefor I attend regular conferences, both national and international. I've also appeared in a few television shows, wrote quite a few articles for national magazines and played an important role in educating females about their health and wellbeing.
For many years, I have dedicated my time to antenatal workshops and training of nurses. I have also enrolled in a few short courses at the University of Cape Town, such as "How to start and manage your own small business" and "Values-based Leadership".
I am also regularly involved in Medico-Legal work, where I act as an expert witness in medical cases. These cases require an objective view and it also brings an opportunity to broaden one's mind.
Being a leader means dedication to the bigger picture. Decision making, managing staff, HR and payroll all form part of my daily activities. However, if you want the ship to sail smoothly, you need to be the captain of your ship and sometimes it involves difficult decisions and actions. Teamwork builds bridges and together we can overcome difficult situations.
When I see my staff struggling, I interfere quickly and help wherever I can.
Life is a balancing act and as a mother of two (MENSA) boys, I know it only too well. Hard work is very important, but so is exercise, spiritual fulfillment and outside activities. Krav maga is my go to exercise - I love the discipline and mental exhaustion that comes with this form of exercise.

A balanced lifestyle helps me stay mentally calm and focused. I've started cooking and baking quite a few years ago and love the precision baking requires. Once a week I have to try a brand new recipe and I'm sure my family appreciates it (most of the time).
Reading is probably my favourite past time - I read anything from fiction, non-fiction, self-help books, biographies etc. Running a busy practice means I spend the majority of my day talking to people and a bit of quiet time at night is an integral part of my emotional wellbeing.
So is exercise. I'm currently training for the Two Oceans Half Marathon to be held in April 2024. One of the most beautiful races ever!
A couple of years ago, I've started learning French. Quite a difficult language to learn. But surprisingly helpful - especially with my French-speaking patients.
