  • Liaise with clients to acquire site information/dimensions and operational input data required to complete designs

  • Generate specific installation instructions for designed components and ensure that they meet safety requirements as per general FSI's (Field Safety Instructions)
  • Interface with outside for component selection, manufacturing, and assembly
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports
  • Perform calculations for composite repairs according with ASME PCC2 and ISO code.

In May 2021, I was offered the position to head the design department after my manager at that time resigned. He had motivated the managing director to hand over his duties on to

What the job entailed:

This job mainly involved meeting with clients to assess their enquiries on the relocation of heavy and/or complex rigging and lifting operations, planning of the project by taking accurate measurements of site layout, machinery dimensions and weights to construct rigging studies on AutoCAD, which thereafter led to management of the project from start to finish by maintaining a good relationship with clients.

My Contributions:

  • From the commercial aspects of the project a daily cost tracking is to be completed ensuring all projects run optimally within the proposed budget
  • Client engagement to assess their enquiries on lifting or relocation of equipment on site
  • Taking the required measurements of the site layout and machinery, calculating unknown weights of equipment and problem solving
  • Utilizing information obtained during site visits to draw up quotations to meet client demands
  • Draw up AutoCAD rigging studies/models to clients giving them a clear understanding of what solutions we are offering to them

  • This involves ensuring projects run smoothly and clients are always satisfied

What the job entailed:

This was merely vacation work to experience how a consulting firm operates. It was a requirement to participate in staff meetings and work on two projects for Engen and Chevron with the experienced staff there to assist accordingly. The Engen project was based on a brittle fracture assessment, whereby an assessment of a surge drum was conducted to visualize where it failed at its highest temperature of operation. The Chevron project consisted of designing and drafting of new filling lines (drain lines).

My contributions:

  • Took part in staff meetings every morning
  • Designing of filling lines (drain lines) for one of Chevron's plants with an experienced staff member
  • Learning the drawings and calculations of the many projects taken by the company
  • I was taught FEA analysis on designs for the first time by an experienced staff member
  • A brittle fracture assessment was done on a surge drum for Engen with an experienced staff member (Mostly calculations)
  • I was briefed on safety for factory work
