Dr. Warren Pretorius is an active physician who exudes a real passion for medicine, priding himself in empathy, patient care, and public health, both in medical public health and occupational medicine. I have an intense interest in public health, emergency medicine, and the expanding novel era of digital medicine, allowing me to continue clinical practice while integrating my extensive experience and qualifications to fulfill an executive management role that ensures the best clinical practice and pioneers the company to be global first in applying innovative, up to date protocols and technology for the rapid global expansion in travel medicine. I have had the opportunity to utilize technology to better streamline the healthcare systems on cruise ships of Carnival Corporation for both guests and crew, as well as in the public healthcare sector of South Africa. Carnival Corporation currently sails 87 ships that service 13 million passengers annually and 100 000 shipboard crew. I am uniquely interested in correcting healthcare systems to provide the best evidence-based integrative medicine for guests and crew. Furthermore, I have an abundant passion for public health and hope that this passion invades the company’s current healthcare system to create the quintessential access to healthcare that not only treats patients but provides programs developed to engage crew in healthy living and preventative medicine. I have experience in emergency medicine, digital medicine, and treating patients of the lowest Social Economic Status (SES) juxtaposed to the management of 6-star luxury cruise line vessels serving the richest of the rich. While onboard as an executive manager (Senior Doctor), we ensure the best healthcare with the resources we have onboard while engaging in innovative courses and experience globally, not just within South Africa. I have expansive travel history sailing around all continents, including Antarctica, which contributes to my utmost respect for dynamic cultural differences. I also have experience in policy writing and research – including but not limited to the COVID-19 niche, where we were the first medical team to successfully start sailing after the lift of the CDC no-sail order. This included research, daily interaction with Greek and USA government authorities, policy writing, and novel techniques in testing and capturing data, all while ensuring I maintained safe access to healthcare for crew and passengers. I hope to use this experience to enhance healthcare in large-scale companies, providing optimal policy production and evidence-based care to passengers and crew. I find the shipboard medicine niche parallel to Aviation medicine in that we tend to the needs of both guests and crew, including both healthy and ill individuals while dealing with limited resources onboard the vessel, whether ship or plane.
