Responsibilities/ Duties: The Senior Environmental Health Practitioner is responsible to Conduct Municipal Health Services inspections; Water Quality Monitoring; Waste Management Monitoring; Health Surveillance of premises; Surveillance and prevention of Communicable Disease, excluding immunizations. Food Control, Vector Control and Environmental Pollution control.

I am currently working as an Senior Environmental Health Practitioner (SEHP) at Xhariep District Municipality. I were appointed March, 1996 based at Reddersburg Local Municipality as an EHP, delivering services to five(5) towns namely; Reddersburg, Dewetsdorp, Edenburg, Smithfield and Trompsburg until amalgamation in 2000. After elections my responsibility grew to nine towns known as Kopanong Local Municipality ( Reddersburg, Edenburg, Jagersfontein, Fauresmith, Philippolis, Trompsburg, Springfontein, Gariep Dam and Bethulie).

The environmental health services were devoluted to Xhariep District Municipality and the transfer of services was only done in March- 2011 after Service Level Agreements between the two municipalities were signed. I am still based at Reddersburg and see myself as a loyal official and hard worker as for all of these years I could deliver environmental health services successful to all of the towns officially delegated to me.

In 2016 the Council of Xhariep District Municipality give me an promotion and created the post of "Senior Environmental Health Practitioner" even though the organogram did not had such a post at point of time. Since the appointment my duties was much more directed on enhancing Environmental Health Services to Communities even though resources were and still is limited within Xhariep District.

I do not have any criminal records against me, or any disciplinary actions filed against me from the employer, which also contributes to my professional image.

b) Attending to Environmental Health complaints by means of complaints book, car, petrol, pen, camera, voice recorder

c) Preventing/monitoring air, water and land pollution by educating public taking readings and remedial action by testing/sampling equipment, media, pamphlets

d) Investigating, control and monitoring infectious diseases using hospital/clinic records

e) Scrutinizing building plans and dealing with license applications and exhumations

f) Performing administrative duties eg report writing, prosecutions and attending meetings using computer, pen, paper

g) Conducting and performing all duties of the Environmental Health Practitioner using all of above

Inspection of business premises to execute environmental health control prescriptions, by:

a) Routine inspection of premises so as to ensure that there are compliance with Health Legislation and the Licence Ordinance concerned as applicable in the area of jurisdiction

b) Giving special attention should be paid to the hygiene of food which includes the transport, handling, storage, processing and distribution of products

c) Regularly inspecting of products and routine monitoring to ensure that a product that is not hazardous to health is supplied and to take the necessary steps to prevent the distribution of food that is hazardous to health

d) Investigating of cases of food poisoning and the implementation of precautionary measures

e) Issuing of business licenses

Perform inspection services regarding Infectious Diseases to prevent the outbreak or spreading, by:

a) Conducting routine inspections on business and residential areas by means of car, diary, petrol, camera, voice recorder

b) Taking water, milk and food samples using sampling equipment

c) Attending to the infectious disease aspects in consultation with the part-time medical officer of health concerned Where he forms part of the health team he shall be concerned with the environmental aspects, which contribute towards the rendering of a comprehensive preventative health service

Execute environmental health control to exercise control over the health requirements regarding Housing, by:

a) Routine inspections within jurisdiction to ascertain the health conditions standard of housing and to make the necessary recommendations so as to obtain rectification

Inspection of the water purveyance service to ascertain that health standards are adhered to, by:

a) Ensuring that a water supply is stored, purified/treated and distributed, that it is not harmful to the health of the consumer and that regular water quality monitoring takes place

Application of Pest Control measures to ensure that effective health control is applied, by:

a) Investigating into the occurrence and spread of rodents, insects and vectors and the instituting of applicable control measures

Perform emergency planning to prevent or manage disaster, by:

a) Contributing to the planning of appropriate emergency measures with regard to environmental health control

Report to Immediate Supervisor to ensure timeous attending to issues of concern by:

a) Informal reporting on specific incidents, problems encountered in the performing of tasks, state of infrastructure, machinery or tools

b) Formal reporting on information, facts, statistics, recommendations, an analysis of trends, technical issues

c) Production of monthly reports of inspections done, concerns rising, recommendations
