Education

University of Witwatersrand
Johannesburg, South Africa

Master of Education from Leadership, Management And Policy Studies
04.2001

University Overview

The Dissertation for my Masters degree was entitled " Data-driven decision-making for instructional leadership" and focused primarily on data use capabilities of school managers in leveraging analyzed learner performance data to inform learner performance improvement efforts in schools.

The main findings of this small scale study revealed that in the researched schools, data use capabilities of managers is low and access to the department of education's data tools, platforms and capacity building programs were not widely distributed across various levels of school management.

To this end, data was not leveraged to its full potential to an extent that it informs decisions around improved learner outcomes. In a nutshell, there was little or no link between analyzed learner attainment data and school improvement efforts.

One of the key recommendations was for the department of education to embark on regular trainings of all school leaders and managers on the intricacies of data use to improve instruction.
