Tongai Gibson Maponga

I am a translational infectious diseases scientist with over 15 years of experience integrating clinical virology, disease epidemiology, genomics, immunology and implementation science to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of viral hepatitis and HIV co-infection in clinical cohorts. My research focuses on, but is not limited to hepatitis viruses and HIV. My work combines clinical cohorts, biomarker discovery and pathogen genomics to inform public health policy and elimination strategies. I have established collaborations across Africa, Europe and North America, secured competitive research funding, supervised postgraduate researchers and I contribute to national hepatitis B vaccine policy through South Africa's National Advisory Group on Immunization.

I lead research on epidemiology, genomics and clinical consequences of viral hepatitis in Africa, particularly hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) in an African context with a high burden of HIV co-infection. I have made contributions to international collaborations investigating HBV genomics, viral evolution and antiviral resistance. I have participated in multi-country studies on emerging infectious diseases including SARS-CoV-2 genomic epidemiology in Africa. Also keen on development and application of next-generation sequencing approaches for viral molecular epidemiology in resource-limited settings.

I serve the scientific community as a peer reviewer for various journals including BMC journals, PLoS ONE, Journal of Infection, Lancet journals, Annals of Hepatology and Journal of Virological Methods
