  • When the country experienced Covid-19 Lockdown in 2020 my son pitched an idea of me funding his business ideas of owning an ISP (Internet Service Provider)
  • We did our research and this took us about a year before we thought we had enough information about the ins and outs of how to start, run and ultimately make money from the business
  • What the business does is the following
  • Our business provides unlimited access to the internet based on individual households or what businesses require
  • Our major focus is to provide the most affordable internet to households in urban townships, rural townships and farming communities where there is no internet infrastructure in place or where the barrier for access to the internet is cost
  • We built our backhaul infrastructure and we spent a month testing the system and we were then flooded with orders and the Operations Head of the business had to go back to school and complete his final year of Law School, so my partner and I had to run the business on our own using our limited knowledge of the internet space
  • Our daily routine is to connect as many customers as we possibly can onto our internet network
  • We visit our customers’ homes and install a router, mount an antennae on their roof and calibrate the antennae and our tower that we have built on a portion of a churches property which we are renting
  • Once calibration is complete, the customer will has access to the internet
  • My business partner and I have been relieved of most off our responsibilities on the technical side because my Operations Head who is more clued up on the technical side of the business, concluded his studies and is now responsible for running the Technical side of the business
  • My daily routine from the 1st January 2025 is more office based running the call centre line, responding and concluding orders received via our WhatsApp line
  • I would also be required to conclude the orders on our CRM system and once the customer deposits their connection fee, I then setup an appointment at a suitable time for our technical team to go and conclude the customer installation
  • Weekly meetings are facilitated with the technical team for us to be able to asses our progress for the week and to prepare for the new week
  • Compliance also my responsibility and I am required to deal directly with ICASA and to handle all business compliance applications like your Consent of Use at the municipalities’ and districts we operate in

  • We would then sign an agreement restricting us selling and promoting strictly Discovery Health products over the set period
  • I left this business unfortunately because by the time Discovery Health had given us feedback that they liked the idea and that we should go ahead immediately, my wife got retrenched that same month
  • I stuck it out at the brokerage and managed the day to day running of the business and selling medical aid at the same time
  • After my wife’s struggle for 12 months to secure a job we couldn’t cope financially, I then decided to go back to Sean Hanlon and asked for my old job back and he obliged
