Summary

The Histology Technologist will perform the various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. This may include logging, batching, and cutting, mounting and staining procedures. Tissue specimens received from surgical, diagnostic, or autopsy cases are sorted, logged, and prioritized according to the standards required. Upon receiving written or verbal orders from physicians or their designates, the Histology Technologist will coordinate daily workflow of tasks and activities in the surgical pathology area with regard to routine procedures, special procedures, and the surgery schedule. The Histology Technologist will assist in the supervision of the activities within the Surgical Pathology and Histology areas of the Laboratory. This will include coordination and performance of all of the various tasks required for completion of all procedures.

Duties

1. Retrieves specimens from the Surgery Department 2. Receives specimens for other cases when delivered to the Laboratory 3. Sorts specimens according to priority and difficulty of procedures and records in pathology log 4. Embeds specimens into blocks and fixes tissue in formalin 5. Operates instrumentation for tissue dehydration, section clearing, impregnation with paraffin, cutting tissue sections, and staining of slides 6. Prepares solutions, stains, and reagents in accordance with standards written procedures 7. Operates and maintains all histology area lab equipment in proper state of readiness, cleanliness, and sharpens and hone microtome knives 8. Records number of tissue blocks verifying proper identification and label 9. Performs and monitors inventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents used, and places orders for replacements as required 10. Assists the Pathologist in gross examination of surgical specimens and in frozen section procedures Collaborative leader with dedication to partnering with coworkers to promote engaged, empowering work culture.   • Main Duty-To ensure the smooth running of the section with regards to TAT by doing frozen sectioning/staining while patient is on the table
  • To maintain the equipment used and to ensure the log charts are filled and quality control/assurance is maintained at all times by personnel using the frozen section area
  • To perform immunofluorescence on renal and skin biopsies and to make provisional diagnosis under immunofluorescence microscopy

Maintenance

  • Maintains high quality output from all instruments by ensuring their correct functioning, liaising with on- or off-campus service engineers when required
  • The incumbent is involved in first-line troubleshooting of instrument faults
  • Monitors regularly the output from instruments, assessing instrument performance against known standards
  • Ensures that the laboratory is kept in an orderly condition, with a suitable supply of chemicals and consumables
  • Manage the annual equipment budget
  • Direct all infrastructure and building fault to CMS Manager
  • To work hand in hand with CMS Manager/Director on all College Infrastructure and new building projects
