Accomplishments
2023: Was invited by US-based organisations, Vital Strategies and Bloomberg Philantrophies, to the inaugural Partnership for Healthy Cities Summit in London, as a speaker on coverage of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the role of the media.
2022: Was a finalist in Vodacom Journalist of the Year competition in features category for the story I wrote on teenage boy that was brutally murdered in an alleged Satanic attack in Klawer.
2022: Was invited as a speaker at the International Aids Conference held in Montreal, Canada. I took part in a round-table discussion as one of the expert health journalist, alongside other health journalists across the world, to discuss future of HIV coverage post Covid-19 pandemic.
2021: I visited Malawi as guest of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to give coverage to their developmental and health projects on HIV and women’s health.
2020: Received a journalist fellowship from the Population Reference Bureau to cover the 3rd Global NCD (non communicable disease) Alliance Forum that was held in Sharjah, UAE.
2018: Part of 25 journalist fellows that covered HIV Research for Prevention (HIVR4P) in Madrid. The conference focuses on new forms of biomedical HIV prevention. Only journalists with a longstanding commitment to reporting on HIV and AIDS were selected for this programme.
2014: Finalist in the Brand House Responsible Drinking journalist awards, Best Online category, for the story I wrote about the effects that alcohol and drug abuse has on the public healthcare system. During the same year, I also received a media scholarship from the International Aids Society to cover the International Aids Conference in Melbourne, Australia.
2012: I also obtained a diploma for being part of a 2-year international programme, Science Journalism Cooperation Project (SjCOOP) - offered by the World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ). The 2-year programme trained journalists on science reporting and research.
May 2012: Attained B.Tech in Journalism (cum laude) from CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology). Got Dean's Merit - reserved for the top 15% of academic achievers.
2009: Was a regional winner in Vodacom Journalist of the Year competition in general news category.
2008: I was a journalist fellow at the Thomson Foundation/Cardiff University in Wales in the UK.
2007: Was a regional and national winner in Vodacom Journalist of the Year competition in Editor's Choice category, which recognised talented young journalist. As a result of this, I was awarded a 3-month scholarship to take part in Thomson Foundation print journalism training programme in Wales, UK in 2008. The foundation offered the programme in partnership with Cardiff University.
