I have worked in different library environments for over fifteen years. My work experience in the provision of information services, especially in the higher education sector, has afforded me a wonderful opportunity to acquire in-depth knowledge of managing information and human resources.

  • In execution of my duties, I take the overall responsibility for strategic planning, finance and budgets, marketing and communication, library stocks and services and human resource management at Mthatha Campus. This requires me to:
  • Strategy development and execution: Provide input in the development of strategic priorities for Library and Information Services. Strategy development for the Mthatha Campus Library. Implement the strategic priorities at a campus level. Internalise an institutional and performance culture that supports the implementation of the WSU mission, vision, values and strategic priorities.
  • Policy and procedure development and execution: Provide input for the development of new and to update existing Library and Information Services policies and procedures. Provide input for Library rules and regulations. Ensure consistent implementation of Library Services policies and procedures, rules and regulations at campus level.
  • Collection development: Increase/revisit Library collections at campus level, aligned to WSU academic projects. Ongoing review of the collections formula. Acquire more full text on-line resources for the campus. Develop digital resources to support research staff at campus level.
  • Marketing and communication: Develop a marketing and communication plan for the campus. Input to Library Services webpage. Conduct ongoing information literacy/user education programmes. Create awareness of new services. Develop and implement survey instruments to assess Library service delivery.
  • User education: Manage the orientation of new staff on Library systems and databases. Manage the training of existing Library staff on system upgrades and changes and new systems.
  • Resource management – people: Revisit structures for its appropriateness to assist the department in achieving its strategic priorities. Contribute toward recruitment and selection process. Staff development. Promote sound employment relations. Human resource administration.
  • Resource management - budget and finance: Staffing and operating budgets. Financial management and procurement. Asset management.
  • Safety, health, and environmental management: Ensure health and safety compliance in the section.
  • Quality Assurance and Risk Management: Ensure the implementation of the quality assurance standards/ measures to meet both internally set standards and the requirements of external bodies.
  • Monitoring, evaluation, and reporting: Develop relevant reports as and when required. Research and implement best practices. Communicate and consult with relevant stakeholders.

Management of ICT infrastructure.
  • Client Services Management: Managing information, training and liaison service in a multi-campus library and off campus delivery system; Manage the creation, development, and delivery of new and innovative user-centred library services.
  • Collection Development Management: Managing the evaluation and selection of information resources. Oversee that the Collection Development Policy is effectively applied by the Faculty and Branch Librarians; Monitors the library materials allocations and expenditures of faculties.
  • Human Resources Management: Managing the human resources for the Information Services of all campuses; Designs, establishes and maintains an organizational staffing structure to effectively accomplish the LIS Information Services goals and objectives; Participates in the recruitment and employment of staff according to the UFH Employment Equity Plan.
  • Financial and Asset Management: Managing the budget, financial resources and assets of the Information Services; Provides financial direction for the Information Services across campuses.

  • In execution of my duties, I manage and develop the special collections division, which incorporates Africana, government publications and multimedia collections. I provide a specialised and in-depth information and reference service to all users of the collections, and also maintain in-house viewing facilities. As these collections span the subject ranges of all faculties, my duty is to ensure that the resources and services of special collections are widely promoted so that the division is recognised as a dynamic and effective service for research, teaching and learning. A further dimension of my role was to provide leadership in digitisation of approved materials, to maintain the electronic theses and dissertation repository, and to assist with the development of the institutional repository. This requires me to:
  • Ensure that an effective service is delivered throughout operational hours. This includes activities relating to the supervision, training and staff development of senior library assistants and also the recruitment and training of student assistants. Keep the audio-visual equipment in good running order.
  • Maintain policies and rules that are designed to balance access and preservation to the collections. Ensure that these are well communicated and understood.
  • Collection development and management.
  • Provide a quality reference service relative to the needs of the users.
  • Liaison with colleagues and academic departments.
  • Active participation in the library website team and maintenance and development of the special collections webpage.
  • Marketing of the division and its services.
  • Develop a digitisation unit for preservation, distribution and promotion of approved resources.
  • Maintain and develop the electronic theses and dissertation platform. Participate in tasks associated with the implementation and development of the UWC institutional repository.
  • Perform any other duties as determined by the library director, deputy or other management team members.
