working

As a semi-skilled boilermaker, I typically possesses vocational training or on-the-job experience without a formal trade test or Red Seal certification. I operate under the supervision of qualified artisans, handling essential fabrication, assembly, and maintenance tasks required for constructing and repairing metal structures like boilers, tanks, and pressure vessels.

Core Capabilities -

As a Semi-skilled boilermakers I expected to execute a variety of foundational trade duties:

  • Material Preparation: Selecting materials, verifying dimensions, and marking off cut lines using engineering measuring tools.
  • Cutting and Shaping: Safely operating hotwork equipment like oxy-acetylene or plasma torches, as well as cold-cutting machinery (guillotines, grinders).
  • Basic Fabrication & Assembly: Positioning, aligning, and fitting components together using clamps and wedges prior to final welding.
  • Tack Welding & Welding: Performing basic structural or plate welding using Arc (MMA) or MIG/MAG processes, usually subject to supervision or standard welding procedures.
  • Rigging Assistance: Utilizing winches, come-alongs, and cranes to safely hoist and maneuver heavy steel plates and pipes.

Working Methods -

My daily working methods require physical stamina and strict adherence to safety protocols:

  • Drawing Interpretation: Reviewing blueprints, templates, and technical drawings to understand the scope and sequencing of work.
  • Risk Assessments & Site Safety: Conducting routine daily safety checklists and hazard reporting before commencing work.
  • Tool Handling & Maintenance: Selecting and maintaining hand and power tools (drills, grinders, hammers), while ensuring a clean, hazard-free work environment.
  • Quality Control: Assisting in inspections and hydrostatic testing to ensure vessels and pipework are sealed, correctly aligned, and structurally sound.

The primary distinction between a semi-skilled worker and an artisan is typically the lack of formal certification, meaning they rely on direct supervision for complex, high-risk pressure vessel work.

Could you tell me if you are looking to hire a semi-skilled worker, prepare for a practical trade test, or source training courses in the Richards Bay area? I can provide specific resources or advice tailored to your goals.
