Senior Consultant

Nedbank
Johannesburg, Gauteng
07.2010 - 04.2011
  • Improved process engineer productivity and quality by automating checks of process models.
  • Introduced concept of components and reusable processes to process engineers.

Consultant

Engen
Cape Town, Western Cape
03.2008 - 06.2010

Business Process Management :

  • Defined the methodology to be followed when documenting business processes
  • Conducted training courses relating to the methodology and the tool (Aris) that was used to map processes.

Project Work :

  • Conducted process analysis and design (As-Is and To-Be processes) on several projects.
  • Facilitated workshops with business owners and subject matter experts to understand as-is processes and then analysed such processes to determine to-be process.
  • Developed the methodology for taking project analysis work through to change management and training documentation for business areas involved

Trading System :

  • Defined as-is and to-be processes for currency risk management, product price risk management, transport, billing and payments.
  • Interfaced with the “business”, identifying their requirements and then translating those requirements into IT terminology

Consultant

Telkom
Pretoria, Gauteng
08.2005 - 02.2008
  • Defined As-Is processes and To-Be processes related to building their network.
  • Facilitated workshops with various business units.
  • Documented processes and obtained signoff.
  • Defined solution architecture for workflow (Tibco) software. This was critical as the number of process permutations that exists is such that a flexible process solution is required as it is impractical to define a full end to end process for each permutation. Solution implemented provided an approach whereby the “business” is able to decide which process variant would execute at run-time.

Consultant

Johannesburg, Gauteng
03.2005 - 09.2005
  • Managed team of consultants documenting business processes for Medscheme.
  • Facilitated workshops with relevant business areas to understand, agree and document processes.

Process Manager

Nedbank
Johannesburg, Gauteng

  • Managed team of 25 staff responsible for business processes used in the bank. Grew team from initial group of 3.
  • Achieved 10% productivity improvement per annum for 5 years. This equated to approximately $10 Million per annum.
  • Designed internal business processes with my team which were then adopted within our division (Process Management).
  • Implemented development plans and internal processes in order to build sustainability within team.
  • Responsible for completion of the “Paperless Environment” business case. Identified capabilities which can be used across the bank and compiled the business case motivation. It covered the use of imaging, workflow, CRM etc to automate business processes in such a manner that the technologies can be reused without having to have a major IT project.
  • Worked closely with “IT Architecture” in order to deliver this in a design that offers long term reuse and scalability.
  • Responsible for the mapping of the Nedcor branch processes from 2000-2004. This involved identifying the processes and documenting the processes using the Aris Toolset. The processes were mapped at a level such that users in the branches were able to refer to them for guidance in the daily execution of their work.
  • Responsible for the design of the FICA and FAIS related processes that were implemented in Nedcor branches.

Projects

  • Managed the BackOffice Centralisation project which centralised most back office functions in the Nedcor branches. This resulted in Nedcor having the smallest back office of all the major banks in South Africa at that time.
  • Designed changes to the Nedcor Narrative system to reduce the number of queries generated due to unknown deposits made to clients' accounts.
  • Performed the technical analysis and design for the elimination of two teller suspense accounts which were resulting in significant rework. This involved changes to the teller software, back-end system processing software and cheque processing software.
  • Responsible for the initial analysis and setup of Project Alpha in 1998 which realised over R400M benefits over a period of 5 years.
  • Completed the analysis and implementation of the Central Processing Division Reengineering project which rationalised the administrative functions into 4 regions nationally.
  • Standardised authentication processes in branches across divisions (Corporate, Commercial, Retail, Private Banking etc).
  • Developed the software for an imaging solution which was prototyped in a branch. This solution used a webcam and microphone built into the webcam to record transactions taking place at the enquiries' counter.
  • Conducted part of the due diligence study for the possible acquisition of Saambou (another bank). This involved estimating the additional staff that would be required were Nedcor to take on Saambou and involved the analysis of the Saambou structure, processes etc.
  • Estimated the impact of taking on Fidelity Bank on the bank branches and back-office.
  • Estimated the impact of taking on Go Banking (Pick n Pay), as well as the new processes that were to be used.
  • Developed extensive business process modelling experience using Aris Toolset, by attending all the major Aris courses, including several that were presented by staff out from IDS itself in Germany. This included “Train-the-Trainer” and an Aris script writing course.
  • Developed a business model which calculated the staffing impact of the Permanent Bank Integration Project as it was rolled out. This involved a significant change in the business processes used and was rolled out across approximately 200 branches nationwide as certain branches were being closed.

Process Engineer

Kenwalt Systems
Johannesburg, Gauteng
02.1991 - 05.1996
  • Implemented of new control system in the Rosslyn brewery – prepared the functional specification for the software and then tested the software. Testing was carried out using a simulator connected to the control system prior to the commissioning of the new system in the brewhouse.
  • Commissioned the new control system in the brewhouse.
  • Developed an innovative control algorithm for the platinum industry in conjunction with the University of Stellenbosch using fuzzy logic / neural networks. Images of the froth in the Platinum Recovery plant were processed and the results used to control the reagent addition.

Additional Information

The focus of my work over the past 10 years has been on enabling organizations to increase the value that they derive from their process models. Most organizations know that they need to map their processes, but having mapped their processes, they often feel that they have not realized the benefits that they were expecting.

I have published and presented two papers at international conferences related to business process modeling. I am currently studying towards a doctorate in this subject at the University of Cape Town and these two papers form part of my PhD:

  • Veitch, R. and L. F. Seymour (2017). Business Process Model Reuse In A Multi-Channel/MultiProduct Environment–Problem Identification And Tentative Design. The 11th Mediterranean Conference on Information Systems (MCIS). AIS
  • Veitch R.S., Seymour L.F. (2019) Measuring Business Process Model Reuse in a Process Repository. In: Di Francescomarino C., Dijkman R., Zdun U. (eds) Business Process Management Workshops. BPM 2019. Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing, vol 362. Springer

I have developed several solutions from concept to implementation which integrated with relational databases using Java, VB.NET, MSSQL Server and MS Access:

  • An SQL Server application for an asset management company in London which integrates with their CRM system (Pipedrive).
  • A pharmacy reconciliation application which reconciled claims from a pharmacy with the remittance advices received back from the medical aid
  • An Android application which assisted users to identify business calls and generate reports for claiming expenses or billing clients
  • An application for a client which calculates the commission payable to sales staff.
