I am a hard-working, dedicated and results-oriented legal academic with an LLB and LLM in Medical Law from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), complemented by extensive experience as both a Legal Practitioner and Lecturer. Recognized with the Outstanding Student Award for Practical Legal Training in 2016, and admitted to the High Court as a Legal Practitioner in 2019, my career is grounded in a commitment to academic excellence and professional development.
My legal expertise is rooted in in-depth knowledge of South African law, particularly Criminal Law, Family Law and Medical Law, and I have honed practical skills in managing complex matters during my time at Legal Aid South Africa while working with a high volume of court matters. My experience there strengthened my negotiation, litigation, oral advocacy, mediation, legal research and drafting skills, while allowing me to thrive in high-pressure situations. I have also built a strong professional network within the legal community, which will prove to be beneficial by promoting industry engagement with students.
I have substantial experience teaching a wide range of law modules across various law programmes, including LLB, BA Law, BCom Law, and Higher Certificate in Legal Studies qualifications. These modules span diverse areas such as Family Law, Law of Persons, Jurisprudence, Criminal Law, Law of Evidence, Intellectual Property Law, Insolvency Law, and more. I focus on creating an engaging learning environment that fosters critical thinking, student engagement, and practical application of legal concepts. I possess strong expertise in the preparing and delivering of lectures, lesson planning, developing effective assessments, as well as academic research and writing. My leadership experience within the School of Law involves assisting with academic counseling, monitoring lecturer performance, overseeing student progress and internal moderation. As a researcher and supervisor, I have assisted students in their legal research endeavors, guiding them in legal research methodologies, research report development, and writing.
In addition to my teaching role, I bring strong communication and collaborative skills, enabling effective interaction with students, colleagues, and external stakeholders. I am skilled at organizing and managing large groups of students, as well as coordinating academic clubs and initiatives like the Journal and Debate Clubs and organizing court visits and guest lectures with industry professionals.
Currently, as a lecturer and PhD candidate, I continue to deepen my legal and academic knowledge while maintaining a deep passion for the law and education. My experience, both in legal practice and academia, equips me with the skills necessary to contribute significantly to the growth and success of the Faculty of Law.
