Summary

56-year-old, South African white male South African citizen by birth. I

live in Bryanston, Sandton, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. I have post graduate degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, Tax and Leadership. B.Compt (Honours)

& CTA from University of South Africa (UNISA) and a post grad diploma in General Management and Manufacturing management from Cranfield University

in London. I have 38 years’ experience in Finance, Operations, Consulting, HR, IT, Business Development, Sales and

General Management. This was gained in several industries as per the table above. I have worked in various types of organisations, businesses in the SMME sector, Multinationals, Corporates, Public listed companies, SOE and NGO/NPO. I have worked in multiple locations internationally, namely Barbados - 2 ½ years, Ireland and UK – 5 years and the rest of my career I was stationed in South Africa but travelled extensively to Europe, USA, China and SADC countries.

I have a solid career track record in finance having started as a clerk (studying part time after leaving school), grown to group accountant, Finance Manager, and held FD and CFO roles. I am very comfortable with numbers but prefer interaction and building businesses and teams by working close with teams and getting entrenched in the operations and understanding the intricacies of the business rather than just getting tied down with numbers.

I am married with two children; both are adults and Chartered accountants so no longer dependents. In my spare time I do trail running and have completed Comrades and Sky100 and several ultra marathons. I love golf, tennis and paddle as my other social activities. I have done work with PFP and served as a business advisor to the Principal of a school in Cosmos City on a pro bono basis. I have also served in Ireland on the local town committee and school board. I strongly believe in making a difference as an individual.

Summary of Experience:

I started as an article clerk in 1985 at a smaller accounting firm in Pretoria, South Africa whilst studying part time at UNISA after matric and completed articles in 1988 and completed B. Compt Honours/CTA in 1989. After studies and military service, I climbed the Finance corporate ladder initially (I held Accountant, Finance Manager, Finance Director and Group CFO roles) but found a fondness for operations and people management including dealing with customers. In 1995 after an acquisition of the medical devices’ division of Wellcome Foundation, I assisted with the set-up of a medical device import/export business in Johannesburg and grown market share in Southern Africa by 200%. In 1996 I was promoted within the group and assigned to take on an offshore assignment as CFO of a NASDAQ listed company (IMTC) based in Barbados to set-up the offshore operations for the 3 manufacturing facilities (facilities were based in England, Italy and Morocco) and the export of the products to the branches in over 30 countries all around the world. After completing this assignment in 1998, I returned to South Africa and was tasked to set-up

a medical device manufacturing facility for the group in South Africa. This was the first medical device manufacturing facility in South Africa and was acquired by Abbott Laboratories and is still in operation today and manufacture product under the QSR of the FDA and carries

the CE mark to allow export to European markets. I excelled in operations and general management and in this capacity took another international assignment in Ireland with Abbott Laboratories.

This was to head-up the project to establish a manufacturing facility for Abbott Laboratories in County Longford, Republic of Ireland in 2003. This facility today employs 800 staff. Even though my core skillset is finance, I specializes in general and operations management. Driving and building high performance teams and being able to get the best out of people and recruiting high performers has allowed me to achieve significant milestones.

I am a business leader and entrepreneur who has cut my teeth after my studies in business (including a post graduate degree in accounting), in the corporate world of the multi-national pharmaceutical businesses which is involved in highly regulated and very complex manufacturing and distribution processes with a big emphasis on quality control and assurance and Environmental, Health and Safety protocols. My core responsibility included establishing standard operating procedures and policies to address the risks that is inherent in parts of the industry and ensured the certification of these systems by external bodies such as ISO and the FDA. I worked in these organizations in Barbados and South Africa and the UK and the Republic of Ireland for several years.

But Africa is my home and I love living and travelling here and in general just feel

very close to the environment and has since 2015 consulted and operated a renewable energy business with specific focus on solar and hydro energy.

I have built up a consulting firm that has assisted SMME and bigger businesses including some NGO’s, in a range of business processes. I specialize in Finance, HR and Corporate Governance and other regulatory areas including B-BBEE and the LRA and BCEA. I have also been part of the start team of several new enterprises which is still in existence today and also been involved in the management of several business change processes.

I thrive in environments where I am able to interact with suppliers and customers and other stakeholders of the organization.

D.Values and personality traits:

I am an optimistic and ambitious person that likes a challenge and is very hands on when required but I have a strong ability to build, drive and lead teams to a organisational vision and success. I accomplish goals set for me or set by myself and the key goal of improving and growing businesses. I consider one of my key strengths is to build high performance teams.

I believe in possibilities, being an optimistic person mean I see opportunities others may not because they are afraid to take a chance because they are blinded by fear of the negative view towards the risks. I believe in challenging work and am used to as an entrepreneur and senior exec to work at times 6 days a week on a regular basis work 70+ hours. I am however a continually active person and find time to pursue my hobbies and passions such as mountain running and trail running and golf with friends or clients and dining with the family. I believe in allowing people second changes and help them to learn from mistakes. I like to see people succeed and do that by supporting them, providing mentorship and counselling, showing interest in them and what they do and see where they struggle. I lead by example and do not expect anything from my team that I am not prepared to do myself. I take responsibility for everything I do and will always own up to mistakes that I made or could have prevented.

I have an extraordinarily strong ability to create cohesion amongst team and client contacts by finding common ground, listen carefully, understand where the person is coming from, seeing the bigger picture and being able to compromise where possible and I know I can learn from everybody. Like many smaller businesses, one need to be hands-on in several areas and a broader skill set is advantageous. I am happy to work as an individual on tasks but prefer operating as part of a team and building teams of high performance and assisting cohesion and leading from the front by setting an example in standard of work and level of activity, comes natural to me.

I have an excellent record of building high-performance teams and has been part of the start-up team of three businesses in the past that is still in operation today. I have operated in the trenches and still do very basic operation regularly to stay familiar with challenges and latest developments whilst also participating at board level defining and executing strategy and meeting with clients and other stakeholders on key business matters. Seeing the bigger picture even in bigger organisations whilst also being able to implement plans and strategies in smaller organisations without straining their available resources to allow them to functional as nimble as they need to be as part of their competitive advantage but at the same time in a compliant fashion, is very important but a rare occurrence in most industries today.

I have an in-depth knowledge and experience of financial models and accounting practices and requirements including taxation and labour law and employment matters including B-BBE structures and requirements and the entire supply chain of businesses. I am very familiar with procedures, practises and rules of engagement in multi-nationals and corporate organisations with huge public interest and has spent more than 14 years in such an environment and were promoted at least three times in these organisations. I love the energy and excitement that exists in sales and operations of very dynamic and diverse organisations and the requirement to constantly think and plan-ahead and stay abreast of the markets elsewhere and of competitors.

I also like to make a positive impact to start with and with that as the basis to tackle the challenge to grow the business and/or improve compliancy, availability and accuracy of information, cost effectiveness and engagement of staff.

Ensuring skilled and high performing business and finance teams that adhere strictly to deadlines, accuracy, and compliancy, have been a cornerstone of my career in finance and I believe

fundamentally that any finance person must understand the business that they operate in very well to ensure they provide the required input to contribute to the success of a business. Understanding a business service/product offering and the various stakeholders, has helped me to achieve success. I also served as chair on the board of Clarigen with Irish directors and shareholders and as Managing director and CEO of a board and brings to your company real life experience in financial management, executive strategy, general management, project management, corporate governance, good manufacturing practises, business and HR practices and providing leadership to high performance teams. I can identify, exploit, take advantage of and fully develop any opportunities that may come my way and has consistently exceeded all goals set for me, and is valued for my drive, challenging work, reliability, tenacity, resilience and ability to produce solutions to problems.

Having spent almost 15 years in the high

tech and highly controlled medical device manufacturing and distribution businesses, I have an in-depth experience of quality assurance and health and safety controls and procedures and systems and also

the Corporate Governance requirements of bigger entities and public entities.

Efficiencies obtained and market and sales results achieved in these manufacturing plants is some of my accomplishments.

Proven background in leading financial analysis, risk management, budgeting, forecasting, internal and external financial audits, reporting, and cash flow management. Strategic planner and analyst with in-depth knowledge and understanding of all financial and tax regulations. Highly competent in devising key performance indicators (KPIs) to define and measure progress towards organisational goals, whilst conducting variance analysis to identify the difference between projected & actual results.

Having done project and consulting work extensively has allowed me to hone my team working skills especially in

cross functional teams and networking is something that I thrive on. I am by nature an optimistic and energetic person and love to expand my network which expands over several sectors and countries.

So, in summary leading by example, not afraid to take on challenges, being hands-on and getting into the detail, not afraid to make the tough decisions and seeing and understanding the bigger picture whilst driving the operations with a sense of urgency.

E.My leadership style:

I am an Enneagram Type 8 which is also known as the Active Controller.

I value having a sense of control and as a result being direct and impactful is important to me. I love challenges and embody a need for justice which enables me to protect others. My team and peers find me caring and approachable.

Acting on my gut instinct and making things happen are second nature to me. I want to influence my external environment and consider action almost always rather than doing nothing at all. I manage the big picture but where necessary will get involve in detail and hands-on and even micro manage to ensure success. When others seem to be dropping the ball I will step in to sort things out. I don’t particularly enjoy micro managing and hence will keep people responsible afterwards and ensure long term solutions like development of relevant personnel, changes in jobs and structures and corrective and preventive measures.

I want to be in the loop of things and will take responsibility to find out and obtain information and do research. Establishing updates as part of communication channels and as part of personnel’s responsibilities is important for high functioning teams. I will always push for clarification and eliminate ambiguity as much as possible.

I have no problem stepping up to accept power and assume leadership roles and positions of authority. I will naturally look to systematically grow my influence and sphere of control. My team resonates with my actions and quickly assume confidence in my abilities. I have a vitality and lust for life, and I exude this to which a team respond well and accept and adopt that and consequently leads to attitude changes. I am always willing to stand up for others and our goals if they are coming on board and show the strength of character.

I am quite comfortable making difficult and unsentimental decisions and take risks when needed. I am very resilient and persevere under pressure and when facing obstacles and setbacks by responding immediately and engaging with the world directly. I highly attuned to immediately turning decisions into practical implementation.

I have great intuition and act on gut impulses in quick and compelling ways and will apply my positive thinking energy towards ideas, the future and possibility.

I have always demonstrated a tenacity to build relationships with people, peers, team members, customers and suppliers. After all, we do business with people.

I consider innovation a critical success factor for me as I am willing to approach tasks in new and creative ways and being proactive, I typically anticipate what needs to be done next. Having a broad knowledge in business and an extensive network I am very resourceful.

I have a strong ability to inspire others to approach tasks as opportunities to learn and grow and consider integrity as key in my ability to inspire others to keep their promises and operate within ethical boundaries as well as expressing my ideas and/or concerns even if they are unpopular.

I ensure that I engage others by being clear on what it is that I want and connecting them to a specific goal and create a clear picture of success and especially important creating a sense of engagement through autonomy. I believe strongly to delegate authority with the tasks and responsibility as well rather than just the task but accepts the buck stops with me and I will take full responsibility and be accountable for failures or tasks not completed.

It is important that the values and vision of the organisation is set, defined, and communicated to ensure staff can relate to the tough decisions required through alignment with organisational values.

My optimism ensures staff approach tasks with a sense that success is likely, employees operate with a can-do attitude, take initiative and are willingly do challenging work to achieve results. Furthermore, it allows the team to believe their effort makes a difference, they learn from past mistakes to improve current performance and find the challenge of the task engaging. As mentioned, I am resilient to setbacks, take personal responsibility for performance of myself and my team and am flexible in my approach. I am highly organised and think through and plan and have contingency plans in place. I prefer operating and leading my teams with goals and objectives that are set and aligned with organisational goals. This is to allow a move towards a vivid image of the future and allows individuals to self-correct and adjust their approach to ensure the achievement of a goal and assist them with making rational choices.

I have an ardent desire and encourage staff members to balance the drive for task accomplishment with the need to engage others in the process. This allows us to achieve extraordinary results, operate with elevated levels of ethics, and communicate the “why” along with the “what.”

I do have lofty standards and expect a trend of continuous performance improvement in all we do and encourage staff members to focus on performing above the current standard. When they strive to achieve superior results, it can only be done when you focus on realizing continual incremental growth.

I encourage staff members to be open in communications and practise this transparency myself as it ensures we communicate consistently and provide a clear understanding of the context and why of a decision and are trusted by others. It avoids people using holding information to control of others.

□Without team work there will never be superior customer service and that also requires teams to communicate effectively within and between departments and strong succession plan must continuously being built on.

□Part of this process requires me to value the content of people’s ideas regardless of their position and I am always willing to spend time with people and embrace diversity.

□I am enthusiastic about the broad action of performance management that requires formal feedback that enables growth to all employees and to listen effectively and celebrate other’s successes.

□This leadership style and behaviours have allowed me to build a career out of fixing problems and businesses and always have one of my team members become my successor.

I am however someone with humility and will discuss ideas that differ from my own and am open to opportunities and information coming from anywhere. Always striving to implement a healthy level of interdependence within the organisation while also removing the barriers of divisional silos. Creating connections across the organisation helps to put each other’s work into context. My teams therefore typically have higher level of cooperation with the other departments and are more independent in seeking information from other parts of the organisation without feeling the need to check with me and they understand how their performance impacts other departments I drive results and coach and provide feedback to my direct reports. I consider such feedback as essential to improve performance. It is important to ensure feedback is provided with input so that staff sees it as coaching and not micromanaging.

I would very much like the opportunity to meet and discuss any opportunities or my profile in further detail.

In closing I would like to thank you for taking the time to consider my application, and I eagerly look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely
