Quality Assurance Officer

  • When I was appointed as a Trainee Quality Assurance Officer in February 2002 half of the Umfolozi Mill was ISO 9002:1994 certified. My job was to introduce the concept of Quality to the rest of the factory, develop new documentation, while converting the other half of the factory to ISO 9001:2000. This included making changes to existing documentation and getting people to adhere to them through Internal Audits and effectively selling the Quality concept through presentations and internal publications, all this with the constraints of time, which was 17 months. Umfolozi Mill was certified with ISO 9001:2000 in September 2003.
  • In July 2003 I was appointed to be a part of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) implementation project team. I was involved in creating data items for each of the analyses performed by the mill laboratory, linking these items to form a system which can give accurate information about plant performance and thereby enhancing quality control, setting up each user authority, level and passwords. I also played a role in training laboratory staff as well as giving support. This project was successfully completed at the beginning of June 2004.

  • Made changes in the types of equipment and methods used and as a result improved the safety and quality in the laboratory.
  • Reporting to the laboratory supervisor, my duties included controlling the store room, stock taking, ordering, issuing of items;
  • Preparation of solutions for the laboratory use as well as those required by the production
