  • To create, provide and maintain the UJ knowledgebase, to ensure efficient and comprehensive access to information to a diverse client community by making accessible the total information sources of the UJ Library

Main Key performance area: Cataloguing:

  • Create bibliographic and item records according to the UJ policy and international standards. This includes: Original and Copy cataloguing of all print and electronic resources.
  • Assign and update authority files and classification to items according to RDA, LCSH, DDC23, MARC21 and the adopted UJ in-house rules.
  • Ensure that all UJ holdings on OCLC are updated and maintained.
  • Catalogue urgent collection/archive / rare books / ETDs etc.

Quality Control:

  • Ensure that the quality control of items is completed before sending to processing.

Environment and ethos:

  • Reporting of all maintenance/health and safety issues to the team leader.
  • Respond to internal and external issues within an acceptable time frame.

Projects:

  • Assist with special projects within the function when necessary.

Conduct copy cataloguing

  • Download the corresponding record of the information resources
  • Customize/Update holdings according to the RDA and Cataloguing Policy
  • Add notes on Sierra (Urgent, locations, number of copies, tags, etc.)

Conduct original cataloguing (If there is no record on the OCLC WorldShare)

  • Create order records in preparation for Acquisitions to order information resources.
  • Provide a physical description of information resources using the Resource Description and Access (RDA)
  • Add holdings on the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC).
  • Generate/create a list of new information resources added to the collection (New acquisitions list).
  • Re-catalogue and update existing information resources from the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 2 (AACR2) record to the RDA.

Classification

  • Determine content/subject of information resources.
  • Assign classification numbers to content/subject according to international classification standards (Dewey Decimal Classification).
  • Reclassify information resources (Check and make sure that new and existing books have the same classification numbers).

Subject headings

  • Verify keywords/subject headings from the content/subject.
  • Assign keywords to information resources according to Library of Congress Subject Headings and Name Authorities.

Authority control

  • Maintain and update headings for bibliographic material in the catalogue.
  • Creating headings for bibliographic materials in the catalogue.
