Counselling Psychologist
East London,EC

Summary

I became a counselling psychologist to be a helping hand, to work with people and help them live to their full potential. As a psychologist, my client or patient is at the centre, and I support the client or patient to develop their agency and know they have the necessary insight to solve their own problems. I am a motivated, bubbly person who loves talking to people and learning from them too. I am passionate about learning and will always go the extra mile to ensure I have the right skill set to enhance the work I do with people. I am currently working with 3 make mentors, running teenage boys’ retreats as I believe this is part of my purpose. It will also bring added value to my skillset and the work I do with teenagers, especially boys and men. I work well in a team and value other people’s opinions and knowledge as well as the experience each member brings to a team. I am a professional with experience applying wide-ranging knowledge base to accurately diagnose and treat patients' disorders. I have demonstrated knowledge of multicultural aspects of psychology and how cultural differences impact screenings and responses.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Mdantsane FM, I volunteered at Mdantsane FM, doing a feature programme on domestic abuse. I researched about different aspects of this topic and presented to the listeners. I worked with various professionals such as attorneys and social workers during some of the sessions. I also worked with Dr. Mashologu in organizing information-sharing sessions named “Boy/Girl Talk” where we worked with various community stake holders on youth issues such as substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, HIV/Aids etc. In 2018, during our masters in counselling psychology, year 1, we did our community engagement in a township school, working with grade 10 learners on various topics including substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, HIV/Aids and other topics that affect young people. We also did scholastic assessments on learners identified by the social worker and teachers at the school for placement in a skills centre in East London. In 2019, as intern psychologists, we continued with community engagement in various schools, running workshops for learners, teachers, and parents. We also had workshops for students at University of Fort Hare. In 2019, we also saw client on the Phelophepa health train, where we saw various clients from that Chris Hani Municipality. My current community engagement involves working with high school learners and equipping them with psycho-social skills, study skills as well as working with boys, providing them with safe space to explore their life challenges.
