  • This has included a range of work from journalism and editing for mainstream media to corporate work and sub-contracting to public relations companies lacking the requisite financial journalism skills for their clients' needs
  • It has also involved working as a sub-editor for a daily publication and as an editor for a self-publishing company, ensuring authors have professional manuscripts that are grammatically and comprehensively correct ahead of layout and design and publication
  • Since 2006 I have also worked as an editor and proofreader for a self-publishing company editing manuscripts for various authors and was employed as a traffic controller (co-ordinating the manuscript flow between authors and editors and finalising the manuscript for layout)
  • This means I have edited and finalised close to 500 manuscripts and am fluent in both British and American spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Between 2000 and 2018, I was The Mercury’s wine writer, contributing bi-monthly columns that covered industry news, wine reviews, personality profiles as well as economic and business-based analysis for major auctions and events (specifically the Nederburg and Cape Winemakers’ Guild Auctions)
  • The Mercury Wine Week ran from 1979 to 2019 as the premier wine show in KwaZulu-Natal

Activities

  • Professional membership - South African Freelancers Association
  • Highway Wine Society membership including 12 years on committee (three as cellarmaster and five as chairman)

Bird watching

I have been an avid bird watcher since 2015 and spent countless happy hours in the bush, mountains and national and provincial game parks across South Africa and at sea adding new bird sightings to my list. I have been on three pelagic birding cruises including two to Marion Island, South Africa's weather station in the Southern Ocean.

Wine writing

I have pursued an interest in wine since 1991 where I represented Rhodes University at the intervarsity wine-tasting competition against the University of Port Elizabeth. I have been a member of the Highway Wine Society (HWS) since 1993; its offshoot by-invitation group 20/20 from 2000 until Covid-19 forced the group to disband and the Westville Wine Society since 2024.

I spent 12 years on the HWS committee; five as chairman and three as cellarmaster. Unfortunately, circumstances prevented me from finishing my diploma from the Cape Wine Academy.

I was The Mercury wine writer for 18 years until managerial changes and cost-cutting ended that relationship. During that period I reported on numerous high-profile events including the prestigious Nederburg Auction and the Cape Winemakers' Guild Auction.
