Final Year Project
Project Title: Portable Petrol Genset Upgrade Employing an Aftermarket Engine Control Unit for Undertaking Fuel-to-Fuel Testing
Objective: Upgrade a portable genset's engine test facility using an affordable aftermarket engine control unit (ECU) to control spark timing and evaluate knock limited spark advance (KLSA) with various fuel blends.
Project Description:
- Ignition System Replacement: Replaced the existing Briggs and Stratton ignition system with an ECU and additional ignition hardware to enable spark timing adjustments during engine operation.
- Engine Management: Utilized the ECU and engine management software to adjust spark timing at different speeds and loads, providing real-time feedback for comparison.
- Load Variation: Adjusted the electrical load on the generator to test the engine under different conditions and measured power output through electrical load and efficiency analysis.
- Fuel Blending and Testing: Prepared ethanol/petrol blends with varying octane numbers using empirical blend models. Conducted engine tests at specific loads and spark advance settings.
- Data Acquisition and Analysis: Captured in-cylinder pressure data using a piezo-electric pressure transducer and a high-resolution shaft encoder. Analyzed combustion data to develop a single-zone, zero-dimensional heat release model and evaluated burn rates and knock propensity of test fuels.
