From 2020 to 2024, my educational journey has been dedicated to advancing my knowledge and skills in agriculture. I began at Cedara College of Agriculture, where I successfully obtained a Diploma in Agriculture in 2023. Currently, I am furthering my education at UNISA, pursuing an Advanced Diploma in Agriculture.
Cedara College provided a robust education covering all facets of farming and agriculture. I engaged deeply with modules such as Agri-business, crop farming, and animal husbandry, gaining comprehensive insights into the operational and business aspects of agriculture.
In my final year at Cedara, I had the opportunity to customize my studies and chose to specialize in both beef and dairy farming. The beef module offered extensive learning on various aspects of beef production, including calving, raising and feeding steers and heifers, and preparing animals for feedlots and abattoirs. A pivotal practical assignment was the Steers Project, where I gained hands-on experience in managing and feeding steers, as well as halter training them. This practical exposure bridged theory with real-world application, enhancing my understanding of animal behavior and husbandry practices.
In the dairy module, I immersed myself in the intricacies of dairy farming, learning essential skills such as breeding techniques, identifying dairy cow characteristics, and the significance of heat spotting. I also completed a course on artificial insemination (AI), a critical skill in both dairy and cattle farming that optimizes breeding efficiency and reduces costs associated with bull ownership.
Practical learning experiences at Cedara included farm visits where I observed milking processes and learned about milk production from farm to processing. Hands-on assignments in dairy processing further enriched my understanding of turning raw milk into various dairy products like cheese, butter, and yogurt.
Through these experiences, I have developed a solid foundation in agricultural practices, business management, and practical skills essential for success in the agricultural sector. I am eager to continue expanding my knowledge at UNISA and apply my expertise to contribute effectively to the growth and sustainability of the agriculture industry.
