Duties on-board

  • Overall responsibility and accountability for all aspects of the maintenance and operating of propulsion engines, other engines, deck machinery, refrigeration and sanitary equipment, aboard the vessel by coordinating and directing subordinates whilst complying with statutory laws, company policies and safety regulations, thereby ensuring maximum vessel availability.
  • Planning, compiling and controlling annual lay-up maintenance to ensure expenditure remains within the parameters set by the fleet department.
  • Training and development of cadets and ongoing training of certificated engineers to enhance marine engineering skills and practices.
  • Liaising with maintenance manager to ensure that critical and other spares are available timely to optimise utilisation and production of the vessel.
  • The primary is to maintain all engineering functions on-board ship including maintenance, operating of equipment and supervise watch-keeping personnel.
  • Ensuring international and local maritime laws and practices are conformed to thereby ensuring the safety and wellbeing of vessel and crew.
  • Controlling the ordering of and optimal consumption of fuel and lubricating oils thereby optimising the utilisation of the vessel and minimise expenditure.
  • Planning and controlling preventative maintenance systems to ensure problem free running of all machinery thereby minimising downtime.
  • Planning and organising the preparation of the vessel to proceed to sea ensuring that all safety measures regarding seaworthiness are intact
  • Liaising with and controlling external contractors to ensure that the maintenance and repairs are carried out within set time frames and conform to speculations.
  • Reviewing and developing all maintenance/operational procedures to ensure compliance with relevant standards.
  • Monitoring the maintenance of all equipment and machinery on vessel according to the planned maintenance schedule.
  • Supervising the Ratings in the Engine room during operations.
  • Monitoring that all engine room personnel adhere to safety regulations by conducting inspection and participate in job safety analysis and risk assessments.
  • Managing human resources to ensure availability of necessary skills by allocating work teams.
  • Operation, Maintenance & testing of engine room bilge system.
  • Preparing the main and auxiliary machinery for the forthcoming voyage testing all necessary equipment alarms and shutdowns as instructed.
