The Last Train Home
Every evening at exactly 6:15, Daniel stood on the same train platform with two cups of coffee—one black, one with two sugars.
For three years, he had waited for Emma.
One Thursday evening, he whispered, “Tonight, she'll come.”
The train arrived. Passengers stepped off one by one, but Emma wasn't there.
Daniel sighed, threw the untouched coffee away, and turned to leave.
“Daniel?”
He froze.
Emma stood behind him.
Three years disappeared in an instant.
They embraced, laughed, cried, and spent the night remembering the life they once shared. For the first time in years, Daniel believed he had finally found his happy ending.
The next morning, he woke to an empty bed.
On the kitchen table was a photograph of them when they were young. On the back, Emma had written:
I finally came home.
Beside it was a hospital bracelet.
Daniel understood.
She hadn't returned to stay. She had returned to say goodbye.
Weeks later, Daniel stood on the same platform at 6:15.
Two coffees sat beside him.
But this time, when the train arrived, he boarded.
Through the tears in his eyes, he smiled.
Sometimes, a happy ending isn't getting the person you love back.
Sometimes, it's finding the courage to move forward without them.
