Community engagement

1. COMMUNITY-BASED EDUCATION AND SERVICE (COBES)

COBES activities for phase 1 of the MBChB program take place in clinics, schools, hospitals, and in communities. All academic staff in the Department of human biology participate in COBES as circuit riders. This is a yearly service in this phase. Level II MBChB students spend two to three weeks at district hospitals around the Eastern Cape learning about hospital operations but also lending out a helping hand under the strict supervision of the preceptors. Level I students visit local clinics schools and communities and study population demographics and some common nutritional problems afflicting these communities. Every year, a traditional Doctor from the surrounding community is invited to give a talk to our first-year students.

2.  ICGEB-High school science education improvement project. M M SHAULI. is the chair and leader of the ICGEB Science Project in O R Tambo D. Municipality.

Teacher capacitating (To conduct workshops for teachers on specific topics as indicated by the teachers and the Science Coordinator, OR. TAMBO District.

Several meetings have been conducted between the 3 identified high schools’ teachers and plans initiated on teacher capacitating program. At a later stage the students are to be invited to WSU site (laboratories to expose them to our teaching aids, such as anatomy models, microscope, simple experiments, the work which will be supervised by Human Biology Department Staff members over different practical topics as identified and agreed with teachers and the coordinator, and the teachers shall join in the practical demonstrations/experiments intended for students.

Brain Anatomy awareness campaign.

In celebration of the World Anatomy Day.

Activities started in 2023 in the same identified schools, which will be the annual event. The key purpose of this celebration is to teach and make all learners aware of the importance of the BRAIN, in their daily life activities and how substance abuse could affect the brain negatively (Drugs, alcohol, tobacco).
