Career Statement
I joined my nursing career in 2003 where I started with my training at the university of the Witwatersrand. My placement for practical exposure was at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and surrounding healthcare facilities in Gauteng province. Having been placed at this institution afforded me a great opportunity to be exposed to a broad platform of education through different disciplines (of medicine) as it is an academic tertiary institution. During this duration of my training in this institution, I got to be placed and rotated in its numerous divisions of specialized units, wherein I gathered lots of experience and skills. We were further placed in other institutions outside this hospital to obtain other specialised skills, and there we had to travel out of our comfort zones. Other facilities include Tara H. Moros Psychiatric hospital (placement in different units over a two-year period), Selwyn Segal (A Private Intellectual Disability facility) and Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital. The above-mentioned rotation would occur at intervals which gave me adequate exposure to obtain the necessary skills and experience. A combination of my curiosity, confidence and acquired skills as a professional nurse led to me exploring in private institutions for part-time/ locums. My work experience in private institutions include ICU in Netcare’s Milpark (Trauma, Surgical and Burns units) and Clinton clinic (General ICU) between the years 2008-2010; 2012-2013. This kind of training and exposure has prepared me to be an independent and competent healthcare practitioner who meets above average standards of care. In additional to my basic nursing degree, I have developed myself further by obtaining a post graduate qualification in psychiatry and am currently completing a master’s degree from the Witwatersrand University (Halted due to personal problems). I have also studied for diploma in health science management at the university of North-west, currently awaiting registration during which I have been working as an operational manager of an acute psychiatric unit both in private and public facilities for a combined period of over three years.
