I had been ice skating since a young child of 3 years old. As I got older I became interested in speed skating which at that time was a new sport to South Africa. I had always enjoyed athletics at school and was elated at being able to combine both, athletics and ice skating. I was chosen to be a part of the first National Speed skating team in South Africa in 1984 and 1985. We competed against a British team and European team in South Africa and we traveled to Oslo to take part in a National competition in 1985. I regard this accomplishment with much pride.
