  • I am responsible for all Visual art department technical projects, i.e., planning, control, organize, and lead operations.
  • Managing projects requirements within scope, quality, standards and budget
  • Plan and monitor daily support programs, and implement specific maintenance strategies, policies, and tactics.
  • Formulate and implement electrical and mechanical maintenance strategies and procedures
  • Facilitate requests for maintenance by initiating and managing the process such as electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, and welding with the UJ Technical Services & Operations department.
  • Manage the department facilities i.e., maintenance, contractors and ensure compliance, safe and hygienic environment.
  • I provide the required equipment for teaching functions is involved, students’ practical projects and technically advanced.
  • Ensures that contractors adhere to the OHS Act standard and University’s operational requirements.
  • Assist with the effective functioning of the Department’s workshop to ensure the best workshop / studio practice to support and obtain structured goals for practical application.
  • I possess extensive knowledge on mechanical and electrical equipment operations such as Lathe, Electro Discharge Machining, Bandsaw, steel and metal guillotine. (available in my workshop).
  • Formulated and implemented electrical and mechanical maintenance strategies and procedures.
  • Ensures the technical preparation of workshop / printmaking according to the relevant procedures daily.
  • Assist the lecturers in the efficient running of the workshop / studio sessions, and related technical aspects as required
  • Ensure practices that safeguard safety and maintain occupational health and safety regulations to ensure minimal risks (I am a Health & Safety Representative).
  • I have experience in welding processes and welding machines repairs and maintenance, I also provide welding training for Visual Art second years students.
  • Accurate record keeping of art department workshop and studios financial expenditure.
  • Department asset management, acquiring and compilation of asset register, maintains it with reference to infrastructure.
  • Develop and implement staff succession plans and keep records
  • Ensures good and safe housekeeping of equipment and tools.
  • Liaise with the procurement department as well as the Faculty Finance officer to get quotations and submit the order to the finance officer for processing (purchasing studio material).

  • Stick (MMA) Manual Metal Arc Welding
  • MIG Metal Inert Gas welding and (CO2 Machines)
  • TIG Tungsten Inert Gas welding
  • Maintain and repair plasma cutting equipment
  • Enforce 48 hours turnaround time strategy Re: maintenance/service requests
  • Test electronic circuits with the use of Power Supply, Multimeter and Oscilloscope
  • Modify PC-Boards consisting of small components, and perform safety electrical tests of 110V, 220V, 380V to 525 VAC and 24VDC at all types of welding and cutting machines (full service)
  • Conduct fault finding using electrical circuits diagrams and troubleshooting
  • Ensures the backlog of job cards are kept minimum
  • Fault find and repair welding machines on field (customer’s premises)
  • Install CNC plasma cutting machines on customer’s premises
  • Manage customer requests and complaints and escalate those you are unable to attend within 48 hours.
  • Enforces the 7-day turnaround time on customers’ machines, including the sourcing of parts.
