In 2012 I was seconded as the Institutional Development Support Officer (IDSO) i.e. School Inspector. I was given 12 schools which was a combination of primary and high schools. One of the high schools (Fontanus) was the most notorious in Soweto and would change more than two principals in any given year including inspectors. Everyone dreaded working there including men. Every year during the first quarter, the Head of Department in the sector called out every underperforming school to account for their bad results. The session included the District Director, Chief education specialist, IDSO and school principal. The OD indicated to me as the IDSO to give him a strategy that will change the cause of events in that school. I told him the only way to change the school is to move all teachers that were working there because they were complacent and bring in new ones. He agreed but did not give me any resources physical or financial.
My journey of changing the school started. I met with all stakeholders in education, politics, community, and religion and they all agreed that it was time the school closed. I negotiated and begged with principals of schools in our District to take one teacher from Fontanus. This was the most excruciating exercise that had ever been done in the education department before. Teachers were reluctant to move, and I made lots of enemies. Eventually, all teachers were moved, and new teachers were requested to come assist. Even with the new staff, we could not have complete functionality of the school. The new HOD and MEC then requested me to close the school. I went and negotiated space for 350 learners in five surrounding high schools giving them 50 learners each. The schools’ doors were then closed in 2014. The school had the most beautiful buildings. The then MEC of education asked me to come up with a concept that would ensure that the building is used. I came up with the concept of schools of Specialization in Gauteng basing the schools on the five Economic Corridors of development as stated in the NDP. The school was meant to cater to the most gifted, above-IQ learners in poor communities and close the skills gap experienced in the country. The first school was born in 2015 and opened its doors as a school of Economics because it is located in the Economic Corridor of Development in Gauteng. The name of the first school of Specialization is Curtis Nkondo, 35 more such schools have been opened in Gauteng.
