• I have been in the security business for 35 years. The first 19 years was with the South African Police Services, 15 of these years in a commander's position with various members under my command. My duties included the management and investigation of crime related offences and Unit Commander of the SAPS specialised unit in Northern Kwazulu Natal, RSA, Project leader of firearm related cases in the Kwazulu Natal Province, Training officer of exhibit clerks in firearm disposals and handling of exhibits, in service training of members regarding crime related cases. After leaving the South African Police Services I joined Anglo Platinum at Swartklip in the North West Province, RSA. I was a Protection Officer in command of a shift responsible for protecting mine assets. I then applied for a position at Modikwa Platinum Mine in the Limpopo Province, RSA as a Protection Services Superintendent. Modikwa is a Joint Venture between African Rainbow Minerals and one of the biggest platinum houses, Anglo-American. When I joined Modikwa there was no adequate Security in place and our team had to design all systems and put them into practice, which included the perimeter fencing, CCTV systems, design a control room and all documentation. I was in charge of the investigation unit as well as the contract security. The contract security had 48 security guards and 8 supervisors per shift and their manager reported to me. I firmly believe in teamwork and I was very proud of my team, as we have saved the mine millions of rands with our investigations, from white-collar crimes to theft. My other duties included vendor visits to ensure that the suppliers that supply the mine products are of the right quality that the mine expects and that they are reputable companies. I also travelled to see the companies Lawyers on a regular basis to handle any legal issues that the mine may have. Furthermore I handled all the disciplinary hearings on the mine, the department’s budget, and performance appraisals of all employees and in service training. We liaised daily with other agencies such as the South African Police Services, traffic departments, Justice Department and other external security companies and work hand in hand in the fight against crime. We have assisted them on a few occasions with arrests and investigations of wanted criminals in the area. I am also used to different cultures as South Africa is a very diverse country. My work load also included general crime prevention, audits and risk assessments at mine shafts and general areas, CCTV system co-ordinator , alarm system co-ordinator, member of the companies repairs forum, tender adjudication board member, second in command of the total security on mine, monitor movement of platinum ore from the mine to the smelter, placing of all orders for the security department, assisting the contract manager in daily running of contract security, control of Group Case Book where all crime incidents are recorded on a database and inspection of all case documents. After Modikwa I was appointed as Asset Protection Manager at Assmang Chrome, Machadodorp Works in Mpumalanga, RSA. The company is in a Joint Venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Assore. I was responsible for the daily security tasks which included overseeing the security contract, investigation of all disciplinary and criminal cases, initiator of all disciplinary cases against employees, fleet manager and personal protection of the Senior General Manager. I was also part of the senior Management of the company. I currently having a dual portfolio as I was appointed as the Group Investigator for African Rainbow Minerals and is responsible for investigations of all criminal and departmental cases of sensitive values within the Group which consists of eight operations and the corporate office. I am still responsible for all security related issues at Machadodorp Works as well. I used to investigate misconduct cases in Zambia as well but the company sold the asset. I am proud to announce that my intervention in investigations saved the company millions in rand value to date.
