Lonmin Platinum Smelter (Operational Metallurgist)

- Quality control monitoring and supervision of Laboratory personnel
- Weekly audits on the sampling plant
- Ensure correct sampling and preparation methods (All Smelter Samples)
- Manage the Concentrate offloading and blending plan
- Perform monthly stock take for the Smelter Plant
- Ensure timely, accurate and completeness of data to Metallurgical Accounting Department
- Monitor and correct any suspect analysis on Limms and XRF
- Maintaining and improving overall plant performance by taking long and short medium-term projects
- Conduct Root cause failure analysis on process non-conformances
- Doing metallurgical audits and ensuring plant integrity with metallurgical standards
- Providing support and technical assistance to Production personnel from time to time particularly with the introduction of new process sampling equipment
- This includes also, plant operation, administrative work, budgeting and performing standby duties
- Providing Plant Management with daily Key Parameters Indicators (KPI) and updating month end KPI
- Relieving the Senior Metallurgists and Production Superintendent (Converter, Wet Section and Slag Milling Plant)
- Training the laboratory and the production staff
- Compiling the safe work procedure for Wet section and Smelter laboratory with Safety Officer and Training Officer
- Conduct Safe Behaviour Observation (SBO)
- Conduct incident reporting and investigation when required
- Conduct risk assessment on plant and sampling equipment
- Participate in the Disciplinary Hearing
- Assistance to ad hoc request from production
- Conduct Monthly and quarterly Process Reviews
- Conduct design reviews.

- Apart from being involved in long and short medium-term Six Sigma projects as team member, I have acted as a Production Foreman on shifts for a period of three months
- The operation itself aims at providing the Junior Metallurgist with an opportunity to gain basic skills and knowledge
- As a Production Foreman my role was to: Ensure that the plant is running at its optimal to meet targets and tonnages produced are within customer specifications
- Organising, planning and liaising with Mining Department and taking decisions from time to time particularly on matters affecting plant production
- Supervision of shift members
- This relates to the acquisition of man management skills without the risk of one losing personal credibility
- Ensure adherence to safety
- The work undertaken is of a highly practical nature and consequently, and in depth knowledge and understanding of basic equipment usage along with their associated problems
- The exposure as a Production Foreman allowed me to interact with the full range of plant personnel employed on the mine and this assisted in building interpersonal skills and personal credibility
- As a Junior Metallurgists my role was: Quality control monitoring and laboratory supervision

- Test new flotation reagents using standard batch flotation and FCTR pilot plant
