Coordinated and managed the largest Telemedicine program in the Western cape:

  • Coordinated the WC's Covid-19's Case and contact tracing program which formed the backbone of the WC's C-19 outbreak response to contain the pandemic. This program involved calling all Covid positive cases in the Province and providing a virtual package of supportive care. (Medical advice, Work letter, referral to quarantine facility for accommodation)
  • The program also involved calling all Covid positive Diabetics for a period of 10 days during the acute phase of their illness and escalating them for clinical care should they de-compensate.
  • Provided clinical oversight for any Health related queries coming to the Contact centre.(e.g. facilitated process to assist South African citizens get exemption letters to return to SA during Covid pandemic)
  • Provided assistance to the citizens of the WC through out the National Vaccination roll out program with any challenges or queries they may have (appointments, adverse events, request for home vaccination/ business site vaccination, vaccine certificate etc.)

  • Worked at the largest Covid-19 field hospital in Africa, comprising an entirely new team sourced from across the country

My main functions :

Anecdotal feedback from staff who worked at the field hospital felt they had an overwhelmingly positive experience. The reasons for this were unpacked in a study with the main reason being found to be due to person-centered approach adopted at the Hospital.

  • Lead the de-commissioning of the long standing Woodstock and Robbie Nurock Community day Clinic’s, almost 100 year old clinic in Buitekant street.

At the same time lead the commissioning of the new District 6 CDC (>100 million Rand project) which involved;

  • Setting up each clinical unit and designing the patient flow upon arrival into the clinic until exiting.
  • Streamlining service delivery by focusing on ensuring the visit is as efficient as can be with the least touch points.
  • Completing audits according to the standards expected in National core standards/ office of health standards compliance.

Once clinic opened held the position of;

  • Clinical manager of District 6 CDC. Servicing 11 000 patients per month and a population of 70 000 people including many old age homes, surrounding schools and factories.

  • Conducted pilot project evaluating the organization and quality of chronic diseases in > 10 large primary health care clinics in WC.
  • Wrote recommendations to Dept of health; “How to improve the organization of chronic diseases in PHC clinics”
  • Wrote discussion document; The benefits of integrating the management of chronic diseases with HIV”

These documents kick started the roll out of the integration of these services across the WC.

Co-author for the study: The Hospital of Hope : Staff experiences of a Covid-19 Field Hospital. A study evaluating the staff experiences which were found to be overwhelmingly positive

District 6 CDC won silver in the Western Cape’s service excellence award : 2018.

Wrote the Discussion document on the benefits of Integrating Chronic diseases of lifestyle with HIV at primary health care level.
