I help companies make the best use of their human and data assets by implementing lean operational methodologies and innovational thinking to decrease overhead and unlock scale. I am a lean pragmatist in my approach to technical solutions, planning and management. I am aware of my values and enjoy atmospheres that support enacting them.
I have excelled at unlocking operational intelligence, team leadership and growth value, line management and team creation through its phases into performing, high level performance MIS & BI development as well as big data analytics and data science, using an array of data storage and analytical toolsets, paid for or open source. I have worked with Microsoft MVP’s locally and internationally. Was the first to implement a Microsoft PDW in Africa, championed the implementation plan, the technology stack and the team responsible. Managed expectations and deliverables across teams through to the executive.
I have served for Naspers and their ecommerce initiatives, Foodcorp and their great retail products, helped Capitec bank grow their market share, assisted Pick and Pay implement gamification through their stores and currently the Firstrand group and their bold and innovative initiatives. Through these opportunities, I have recieved multiple awards including "Best IT professional" in 2009, regionally and nationally as well as Innovation and CEO collaboration awards at First National Bank. This reflects my constant desire to deliver innovations through quality scalable products and solutions. I aim to seek out challenging projects, turn them into new success stories, enjoy new friendships and experience all life has to offer.
My role involves leading the digital and interactions data teams within the retail area. My responsibilities include managing projects, staff, business expectations which ultimately generate value through cross-functional IT team collaboration, decision support and strategy execution and delivery. I also am very hands on t technically lead the team in processes of our SDLC that involve idealization, architecture and research and development. Our outputs include explaining gaps in our digital and other interfaces to better understand how to contact and convert our consumers in the most efficient ways. Since then technologies spanning open source technologies like python have been integrated to internal systems leveraging Google Marketing as well as Google Cloud Platform to bridge operational acquisition and interface technologies, to data and analytical capabilities to create a digestible story for our decision managers about who our clients are, what they desire, and how to help them. These efforts has seen us improve client journeys and unlock close to R100 million worth of previously dropped loan applications. Awards received: Innovation and Pioneer.
My focus at Pick and Pay was around creating a reporting platform to support real-time gamification within all operational areas within a single store as well as decision support in identifying efficiencies. This effort was part of optimizing the already lean processes that occur within retail stores, but drive it from the store staff's intrinsic internal need to be the best and competitive, driving better customer experience and job satisfaction, driven by data. These operational areas were unpacked and distilled to 25 key Kpi's. Pick and Pay is one of South Africa’s largest retailers, taking into account the need to compare a stores 25 Kpi's within the different quartiles of all stores within its region and the country and the immense trading volume was an immense and rewarding challenge once delivered, through collaboration and architecture that saw a rollout to 600+ stores. Operational gamification saw an increase in customer experience and trading volumes due to increased efficiencies in picking and packing. Low performing stores saw an uptick as rewards for improving low KPI areas became a focus.
Assisted with the architecture and development of a trading terminal with local and international company exchange financial, statistics and meta data utilizing MDX and .Net.
Implemented best practices around Business Intelligence, Data analytics and Database development.
Assisted Product Managers by implementing a self service reporting approach
At Capitec, I lead a very diverse and qualified team in delivering information to the business as well as implementing its long term Big Data strategy through the Microsoft Parallel Data warehouse.
One of the biggest problems faced when entering Capitec, was their Mis platform, which lived on the same hardware cluster as their banking platform. Being responsible to consume and deliver data to 600+ branches is no easy feat and especially so on demand days like monthend. That was never more clear than on days, when staging processes would run past 5pm. rendering branches useless on month ends, losing customers to the stigma that a small bank stands no chance physically to its competitors.
This was my first major win. With risk and SDLC protocols adhered to, and insights into the performance counters of the Servers involved, custom Server performance logs and counters with a layer of SSRS charting (operational intelligence), which assisted in decisions that saw an increase of almost 6 hours saving in run-times and assisting branches and staff by having an operational banking system at month ends. Further to that the team grew with consultants and MVP’s that implemented the first Microsoft PDW in Africa through implementing BIML and supporting architecture for rapid application development.
My responsibilities at Kalahari.com revolved around the price engine, variable markup systems, and general data load and data quality issues by identifying system gaps that were harming customers and the business. This resulted in a number of efficiencies as a result of data exploration and collaboration with other teams.
Identify design and maintain Financial Business Intelligence Models, according to company and business specified processes, reporting on these integrated systems as well as Front End development to compliment the BI system.
This included Data Cleaning, ETL Development, Relational database design and redesign (Normalization, SDLC, Stored Procedures, Triggers) OLTP, as well as cube development, Hyper Cubes, Dimensions, MDX, Named Calculations, Excel development with Cube Data-sources, Reporting on Data, MIS Stats, Dashboard Development, Data analytics.

I have recently taken up 3d printing. Its a wonderful waste of plastic sometimes, but when you get the leveling right, works of art follow!
Similar to music and music production, which has always been an interest of mine. Extracting emotions and turning them into messages that follow science and math, that all can share has always amazed me, which is also similar to Photography, a modern art!
