GP/Medical Officer with 7+ years' experience in supporting community health needs. Coordinated care for referred patients and those with chronic health conditions and working in the emergency setting. Delivered patient care addressing variety of issues including poverty, high patient loads and interprofessional conflict in the state and private sector. Grateful and very inclined to further develop quality of patient care. I am a supporter of primary health care and continual improvement processes.
I has been 2+ years of running my own practice
This has been especially rewarding regarding planning of the infrastructure, staff, equipment/medicine/furniture needed to run a GP practice. We have received positive feedback regarding the practice from the community, as it often served as a one-stop facility, offering a consult and collection of medication on the same premises and often being open over public holidays/ Sundays. We also try very hard to eliminate added costs as far as possible, trying to cater to the whole community by being affordable/accessible. Albeit it always remains a learning curve.
We offer: - After-hour services
- Consultations + medication packages
- A small pharmacy/ regular dispensing
- Female health care/ family planning
-Basic sonography / ECGs
- Chronic follow-ups/ script renewals
- Small surgical procedures
- IVI drips/sutures
-Performing phlebotomies and analyzing/relaying results/ biopsies/ incisions+drainage, analyzing X-rays,etc
-Vaccinations
-referral of urgent and non-urgent(needing specialist opinion) to appropriate care
During this time I also worked in LIFE Knysna EC over weekends/ week nights and assisted in OBGYN in theatre/ General surgery/ Hepatobiliary surgery/ Orthopaedics at George Mediclinic/ Oudtshoorn state Hospital.
During this time I purchased half of a closed corporation in De Doorns. Because I was quite unfamiliar with the ropes regarding business side of the medical field, this was a steep learning curve. It took too long for me to to obtain my dispensing license and my business partner was 67 years of age. We were totalling 120-200 patients a day, and I still haven't had a proper bout of leave for 18 months by the time I reached March. I am however appreciative of the experience since the experiene I gained from communication and the art of really listening to patients seemed to be a something I needed to learn. I was also getting quite a low salary from our closed corporation and consequently decided to sell my part of the closed corporation. My sister who is studying law and is more business orientated, supported me tremendously. During this time I continued doing multiple shifts at Worcester Mediclinic EC and a few shifts at Paarl Mediclinic EC and one overnight shift at Robertson Hospital. I also had a desire to persue a diploma in Anaesthesia but tried to keep it at the back of my head.
From January 2021 up until October 2021 I've been involved in multiple hospitals with a 4 month contract at Bassier Medical. I resided in Paarl and worked at a GP practice in Belhar where I roughly saw 50-70 patients a day. These would mostly inculde chronic visits/minor surgical procedures, etc. I worked for a few weeks and weekends in Eersterivier hospital's Internal Medicine and still did multiple calls between Grabouw hospital EC and Karl Bremer Hospital EC. This remained profound exposure during the COVID 19 pandemic. During this time I also obtained my basic course in botox and fillers.
