Work History

General Medical Practitioner (Wilderness Med)

Self-employed
04.2022 - Current

I has been 2+ years of running my own practice

This has been especially rewarding regarding planning of the infrastructure, staff, equipment/medicine/furniture needed to run a GP practice. We have received positive feedback regarding the practice from the community, as it often served as a one-stop facility, offering a consult and collection of medication on the same premises and often being open over public holidays/ Sundays. We also try very hard to eliminate added costs as far as possible, trying to cater to the whole community by being affordable/accessible. Albeit it always remains a learning curve.

We offer: - After-hour services

- Consultations + medication packages

- A small pharmacy/ regular dispensing

- Female health care/ family planning

-Basic sonography / ECGs

- Chronic follow-ups/ script renewals

- Small surgical procedures

- IVI drips/sutures

-Performing phlebotomies and analyzing/relaying results/ biopsies/ incisions+drainage, analyzing X-rays,etc

-Vaccinations

-referral of urgent and non-urgent(needing specialist opinion) to appropriate care

During this time I also worked in LIFE Knysna EC over weekends/ week nights and assisted in OBGYN in theatre/ General surgery/ Hepatobiliary surgery/ Orthopaedics at George Mediclinic/ Oudtshoorn state Hospital.

General Medical Practitioner

Myself/ Dr Kok
10.2021 - 03.2022

During this time I purchased half of a closed corporation in De Doorns. Because I was quite unfamiliar with the ropes regarding business side of the medical field, this was a steep learning curve. It took too long for me to to obtain my dispensing license and my business partner was 67 years of age. We were totalling 120-200 patients a day, and I still haven't had a proper bout of leave for 18 months by the time I reached March. I am however appreciative of the experience since the experiene I gained from communication and the art of really listening to patients seemed to be a something I needed to learn. I was also getting quite a low salary from our closed corporation and consequently decided to sell my part of the closed corporation. My sister who is studying law and is more business orientated, supported me tremendously. During this time I continued doing multiple shifts at Worcester Mediclinic EC and a few shifts at Paarl Mediclinic EC and one overnight shift at Robertson Hospital. I also had a desire to persue a diploma in Anaesthesia but tried to keep it at the back of my head.

Locum Tenens

Bassier Medical/ Karl Bremer Hospital/ Grabouw Hospital/ Eersterivier Hospital
01.2021 - 10.2021

From January 2021 up until October 2021 I've been involved in multiple hospitals with a 4 month contract at Bassier Medical. I resided in Paarl and worked at a GP practice in Belhar where I roughly saw 50-70 patients a day. These would mostly inculde chronic visits/minor surgical procedures, etc. I worked for a few weeks and weekends in Eersterivier hospital's Internal Medicine and still did multiple calls between Grabouw hospital EC and Karl Bremer Hospital EC. This remained profound exposure during the COVID 19 pandemic. During this time I also obtained my basic course in botox and fillers.

Community Service Medical Officer

Robertson Hospital
01.2020 - 12.2020
  • District hospital. Rotated between casualties, general ward, pediatric ward, theater and clinics. Junior doctor with good senior supervision.
  • Relatively small hospital with large number of patients.
  • Was responsible for administration of multiple general anesthesias/ spinals/ sedation/ local anesthesia. Comfortable with ASA 1 and 2's.
  • Responsible for performing multiple emergency and elective caesarian sections. Comfortable in performing most caesarian sections. Also performed bilateral tubal ligations, MVA's, marsupialization of bartholin cysts, evacs and ectopic pregnancies. Have also performed circumcisions/ removal of lipomas/ganglion cysts(lumps+bumps) in internship. Comfortable in repairing perineal/cervical/vaginal tears that don't need specialist referral. Not especially good at sonars but can do the basics.
  • Comfortable running casualties during calls and familiar with referral system in Western Cape. Learned a lot on how to work in a team in relation to fellow doctors, nurses, allied health and other hospital staff.
  • Comfortable in working in general ward/pediatric ward/Obstetrics/KMC.
  • Worked at Bergsig clinic for numerous months where 15-25 patients are allocated to you in a 2.0-3.5 hour period. I am appreciative of this experience because I could practice continuity of care and optimal time management.
  • Familiar with ICD 10 coding and inclined to learn about medical aid funding.
  • This also remained heartfelt exposure during the COVID 19 pandemic.

Medical Intern

Pelonomi Hospital
01.2018 - 12.2019
  • Rotated between Universitas Hospital, Pelonomi Hospital, National District Hospital and Freestate Psychiatry Complex.

  • Worked multiple casualty shifts at National District Hospital and also worked in trauma in Pelonomi Hospital.
  • In 2019 I was elected as our intern group representative of about 15 interns. This was a good learning experience in retrospect as it was my responsibility to disentangle/rectify many personal/systemic problems in the group. We were facing a general shortage of interns during this time and subsequently I had multiple meetings with head of departments and fellow interns to find plausible compromises between parties. I was also responsible for setting up the roster/ allocating leave/ relaying messages from management/ relaying messages from fellow interns and making the best of an already challenging system.
  • I completed my internship uninterrupted and only took one day of sick leave in the two years.
