LABORATORY:
- Perform all routine tasks on benches including processing, microscopy, and identification according to standard operating procedure
- Supervise staff on benches with correct techniques and good laboratory practices
- Train staff in order to ensure staff competence
- Supervise TAT (turnaround times) according to various TAT standards
- Ensure that all IQC (Internal quality control) procedure are performed according to work instructions and report any discrepancies
- Monitor safety and procedures and ensure adherence to safety rules at all times
- Review work instructions yearly and make amendments accordingly
- Communicate all changes to relevant personnel involved and monitor correct implementation
- Perform 10% microscopy checks and report all non-conformances
- Handle all problem specimens on benches when required
- Handle telephone inquiries in a professional manner to ensure good client relation
- Perform troubleshooting when required
- Maintain order and discipline within the laboratory according to the house rules
- Perform validation and evaluation of instruments, methods and new processes
- Involved in setting up new test procedures (testing, implementation and training of staff)
MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Ensure that supplies, equipment and reagents are available and organized for efficient laboratory operations
- Inventory management: Stock monitoring; Stock rotation; Stock ordering
- Supply chain management: Communicate with suppliers to ensure timely delivery of stock; Provide forecasting; Follow up on backorders; Ensure incoming stock are inspected for quality before use
- Documentation and Record-keeping: Inventory tracking; Labeling of incoming stock
- Time management and Prioritization: Ensure that supplies with short shelf lives and critical items is prioritized; Scheduling regular replenishment of stock to avoid interruptions in laboratory operations
- Stock take: Perform monthly and yearly stock takes
- Cost control: Monitor and manage cost of consumables
- Safety: Adhere to safety guidelines for storing, handling and disposing of substances (chemicals, biological and hazardous)
- Communication: Ensuring open and continuous communication with laboratory staff, managers and pathologists with regards to stock shortages or issues
- MM Training: Train new staff on use of the Procurement system as required
MICROBIOLOGY DICTIONARY / IT:
- Streamline Microbiological testing workflow by improving efficiency and ensure accurate and timely reporting of infectious diseases and antibiotic testing patterns
- Coordinate microbiology dictionary upgrade projects
- Setup new or upgraded microbiology test procedures, QC ranges, worksheets, analyzers on the Meditech system on a national level
- Test and validate new and/or upgraded microbiology dictionary setups
- Assist all micro end-users (Laboratory staff, Managers and Pathologists) with dictionary enquiries and/or problems
- Identify micro end-user needs regarding Meditech dictionaries
- Evaluate feasibility and impact of dictionary additions and/or changes on the overall Microbiology dictionary
- Handle and resolve billing inquiries
- Provide consumable costing when required
STATISTICS:
- Compile statistical reports and/or information from Meditech (External and Internal clients)
- Collaborate with IT on downloading of special request reports and/or development of new NPR reports
- Compile procedure and/or specimen statistics on request of the Laboratory Manager and Pathologists
