Mentoring
Since joining St John in 1978, I found a family of like minded people. Throughout the years I was mentored by these people until I suddenly found myself the mentor. The satisfaction found in assisting people in some of the worst moments was immense as was the fellowship my St John family offered. I also became a St John Home Based Care and First aid instructor and another passion was born. The satisfaction of teaching is just awesome. After some years I discovered that first aid alone was not sufficient to assist some of the injuries I experienced on events so I looked further into other courses, being one of the first Durban volunteers to obtain my PEC and EMA through Red Cross. This also showed me that medics from all organizations could work together. I then went on to further my education with a Basic Life Support Qualification despite some resistance to going outside the familiar first aid courses.
I could combine my love of reading with the passion of caring for people as many events were quiet and peaceful with some down time. In co-ordinating event, once the difficult part of getting members to the correct venue with all the necessary equipment was complete, unless an emergency occurred I was able to park in central spot and read. I had also discovered various site that offered medical reading studies or talk (This was before the days of CPG's) that I could go online and do. I also developed a preference for medical rather than trauma. In the field you are treating the signs and symptoms which left me curious as to the problem so I would inevitable end up back at the hospital at a later stage to discover the diagnosis!
One of the hardest things has been to realize that I now need to stand back as overview and let the new medics treat so they too can learn.
