My name is Carla du Plessis and I am currently pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering at Stellenbosch University, with an expected completion date of December 2025.
Known for delivering reliable support in project management and engineering tasks, I am goal-oriented and eager to learn. Bringing analytical and problem-solving skills to optimize manufacturing processes, with focus on continuous improvement and operational efficiency.
During my internship at Monoweld I learned in depth about the galvanizing process and how it can be optimized. I conducted a time-and-motion study in order to provide the company with data on their jigging process. I then developed continuous improvement programs to optimize this process. I designed a galvanizing crane on CAD and created a project plan timeline along with a budget for manufacturing this crane.
During my internship at Rustenburg galvanizer's I worked as a consultant for the company. My tasks included creating a project plan timeline, Value Chain mapping, current service process mapping, Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) with a continuous improvement plan, galvanizing process review and improvements, foremen performance comparison, acid measuring tool implementation and setting up a regression-based budget plan. Improved internal processes by recommending updates to existing procedures based on best practices in the industry.
During the semester, I assumed the role of Purchasing Manager, overseeing the production process for a virtual fruit juice company. This team-based simulation provided a realistic experience, where participants were tasked with managing a company's supply chain by making strategic decisions across various departments to optimize overall performance. These departments included Purchasing, Operations, Sales and Supply Chain. My responsibilities included improving purchasing efficiency, managing supplier relationships, and ensuring alignment between purchasing strategies and the broader supply chain goals to enhance profitability and customer satisfaction. Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of how to balance purchasing constraints with business objectives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
I successfully completed a short course that was provided by Stellenbosch University. This course focused on developing practical workshop skills. Throughout the course, I gained hands-on experience operating a range of machines, including lathes, boring mills, drilling machines, milling machines, grinding machines, and sheet metal presses. Additionally, I learned fundamental welding techniques, further strengthening my technical capabilities in a workshop setting.
Co-founded a volunteer group in the Stellenbosch area, called Little By Little. We organize outreach opportunities which include hosting Fun Day's at the Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch, painting the walls at a crèche in Idasvallei etc..
