Mechnaical Engineer

Summary

I have both Mechanical Engineering and Systems Engineering experience, which I gained during my career in new product development. The extensive practical experience gained throughout my career with bringing new products to market is supported by the formal qualifications in mechanical engineering and those obtained during my honour’s degree in Management of Technology in the following subjects: New Product Innovation methods; Systems Engineering and New Product Technologies. Working together in cross functional engineering teams in order to meet the performance requirements of the product is a skill that I learnt while using the systems engineering approach to new product development. Experience in technical writing and Systems Engineering Management documentation. Good negotiation skills during meetings and design reviews with the customer and the project team was gained during these efforts, which was assisted by skills obtained with my involvement with the Toastmasters International, an international public speaking organisation.

  • My role was as Principal Mechanical Engineer, with special skills in opto-mechanical design and fine mechanics engineering.
  • I was tasked with the opto-mechanical design of an electronic zoom, which enabled a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to complete the electronic zoom prototype, fitting into an existing airborne stabilized turret assembly already in production at Aselsan in Turkey.
  • The zoom design was further used in Aselsan South Africa’s stabilized turret assembly.
  • In my role as the Principal Mechanical Engineer, with specialised opto-mechanical skills as part of the laser team.
  • The laser team successfully produced an airborne laser target designator prototype for the Aselsan South Africa’s stabilized turret within two years.
  • The success of the project enabled more design phases to be completed, culminating in an Advanced Prototype, which was performance parameters were demonstrated to Aselsan, Turkey.
  • The publication of the following engineering documents were completed:- Mechanical design work packages, Complete data pack, including Electrical interfaces; Test readiness review, Test and evaluation plan on sub-system and system level; Test procedures and Assembly instructions for the laser were also completed.

Independant Contractor

Hensoldt
07.2018 - 12.2018

Acceptance tests for a laser range-finder product.

Independant Contractor

Uvirco
03.2018 - 07.2018

Published European Community compliance documentation for Uvirco's corona camera products which had laser pointer.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Cassidian/Airbus/Hensoldt Optronics
11.2014 - 02.2018
  • My experience in qualification testing to military standards, allowed me to specialise in the design, build and testing of laser target designators and laser range-finders in.
  • Tasks included: Publication of qualification documentation for laser range-finder and laser target designator, for international customers, were delivered as well as the delivery of a laser target designator.
  • Design and implementation of an upgrade of a Denel Eloptro produced laser range-finder, which was completed successfully to customer satisfaction.
  • Being seconded to Hensholdt Germany for design work, in Germany, on a laser range-finder for a NATO product.

Systems Engineer

Carl Zeiss Optronics
10.2007 - 10.2012
  • While tasked to qualify an airborne stabilized turret for an international customer, (which was also supplied the SA Navy’s Westland Lynx helicopter) I gained experience in managing the production baseline and with dealing non-conformances of the product requirements which occurred on occasion during qualification testing.
  • Tasks included the following: Qualification documentation, The recording and documenting of component failures; Root cause analysis and corrective action by using requirements traceability methods; As well as, publishing and releasing documents for service bulletins to customers which already had products in the field.

Sub Systems Engineer

Denel Optronics
04.2002 - 03.2004
  • The publication of the engineering qualification documents, to international customers, as well as the SAAF LUH helicopter stabilized turret, enabled me to develop strong documentation writing skills necessary for publishing the following type of systems engineering documents: Requirements traceability using DOORs software; Test procedures; Test instructions; Test/design reviews and Test reports.

Mechanical Design Engineer

CSIR
08.1990 - 04.2002
  • I worked in research and development for military and specialised engineering projects.
  • The skills gained during this phase of my career included: CAD design skills, creating a detailed digital quoting program for the mechanical design department; Published engineering design process to comply with ISO 9000; Systems Engineering’s whole system approach to product life cycles of new products; Document the Total Quality Management processes in design and new product development.
