  • Sasol Secunda had many pump failures where every day a pump was failing. An investigation into the plant led me to pick up that the issue lay with the cooling system which would need to be replaced. Sasol at the time could not afford to replace the entire system. I then designed an inducer that would help pumps not to cavitate within the current environment. The design of the inducer didn’t affect the pump’s performance and came in at a fraction of the cost of replacing the cooling system, totally avoiding a breakdown.

  • Achievement working as a Senior Development Design Technician.
  • I was involved in designing the Exciter gearbox for the vibrating screens. My responsibility was Research and Development test bay workshop. One of the achievements was to make the test rig that can accommodate three types of exciters. The challenge was to have the rig inside the workshop, but it was too much risk and the floor would have to suit this type of application. We'd never had this type of rig before, so I did some research and consulted Pretoria University to get advice in order to achieve this. The head of Vibration and Structure at TUKS gave me advise. This project took me around six months to get things rolling from separating the floor making sure that when the rig is running vibration on the floor doesn't affect other areas. I used VSD to run the test rig to make this easier if we change the speed so it will be simple. Either we changed the pulleys selection and increased the speed base on the spec. I assembled the prototype and advised the engineering team in any suggestion to make designs easy and simple. Testing the exciter, this was one of the challenging tasks in hand. Because the first exciter was running for 4 hours but temperature was raising around 90 degrees Celsius. I picked up that too much oil in housing would cause the temperature to raise. Clearance / tolerance fits were not correct. When I raised this issue, the bearing maker realized that they didn't consider the bearing cartridge inside the bearing cartridge. All the parts were sent to the supplier to correct tolerance and we assembled the exciter and test. The temperature stabilized at 46 degrees in an hour’s run - an achievement that we'd never had before. All over the world our Exciters are on demand. These Exciters can produce between 60 to 120-ton force.
