  • As a section, we would place different adverts in different media houses and I had a chance to write some of them. These helped the organization’s stakeholders to be aware of what was going on in Bulawayo. I helped in doing a couple of road closure adverts and the Annual Civic Service advert. I also had a task of writing speeches. The speeches were mostly for the Mayor. These were written whenever there were events. In these, I learnt to improve my speech writing skills and be in a position to know what important figures can say or cannot say in public. I wrote speeches for the Annual Civic Service and the Mayor’s day with the elderly. As we prepared for the Annual Civic Service, my role was to write minutes to the planning committee and send them with notices of the next meeting. This improved my minuting skills as I had to apply them later on as Bulawayo was preparing to host the first annual Bulawayo Arts Festival.
  • During my internship at the Public Relations section, I was involved in organizing and managing events including the Bulawayo Junior City Council ones. This meant that when there was need for identifying venues, getting at least three quotations for every service and making bookings. Preparing programs, doing guest lists and calling guests to remind them of events was also done by me.
  • Whenever there was need for comments from departments, I would write comment sheets, letters and memorandum to Bulawayo City Council employees. These were being used to communicate with stakeholders. For example, if a client was not happy with services and they write a letter, the writer would request for comments from departments and then reply the client. In doing this, the writer was able to communicate both internally and externally.
  • I had an opportunity to help in exhibiting at the Council stand during the UCAZ annual conference held at Zimbabwe International Trade Fair. In this exhibition, the office was given a task to be head Ushers of the event. This showed me the importance of stakeholder engagement through exhibitions as I realized that during exhibitions, people are more relaxed and more comfortable even when discussing issues that are of great concern to them. In their relaxation they tend to understand better which helps in terms of the organization’s reputation.
  • The writer was involved in writing news stories and taking pictures during the City’s events. Whenever there was an important event, a story had to be written so that people are made aware of what is happening around the City. Stories that were written include the Mayor’s Day with the Centenarians; Water Crisis Schools programme story and the History of Bulawayo Dams among others.
