Summary

I am a dynamic and experienced mineral processing professional. My mining journey started in 2004. My enthusiasm, passion and skills are geared towards managing beneficiation plants and the associated unit operations, especially (but not limited to) chromite concentration (UG2, MG & LG ores). I have a proven track record that shows my ability to achieve process excellence and high plant efficiencies in a competitive and demanding environment. I am a positive change driver through systematic continuous improvement, process innovation and developing highly effective teams. I have the ability to create and lead high-performance teams and foster a growth and learning environment within teams and between individuals. I have first-hand expertise in project management, especially capital projects and plant optimisation projects. I posses both technical and creative problem-solving skills that turn challenges into growth opportunities. I am proficient in process safety standards, systems and procedures and I strive to incorporate world class process safety standards into all plant designs, process management and projects that I execute.

Reporting to the UG2 Operations Manager (MHSA 3.1a) as the appointed Sub-Ordinate Manager (MHSA 2.6.1) for EPL UG2 CRP Operation and also responsible for the technical proficiency and performance of the following 7 Chrome Recovery Plants:

  • K1.5 & K2.5 UG2 (Sibanye Kroondal), K4 & EPL UG2 (Sibanye Marikana), Imapala Merafe, Impala Unicorn UG2 (Implats), Waterval West Plant (LG6 Tailings Retreatment Plant).

Role Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Appointed Plant Superintendent, under the MHSA Regulation 2.6.1, for EPL Chrome Recovery Plant and responsible for the asset's performance in terms of production, engineering, quality, health & safety & environment.
  • Technical Superintendent for all the UG2 Plants, tasked with achieving operational KPIs in terms of Plant performance, process safety, production outputs, quality control, product dispatches, plant efficiencies and utilization.
  • Ensuring operational compliance to the Mine, Health and Safety Act (MHSA), Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Labour Relations Act (LRA) and Glencore Group Procedures and Standards.
  • Planning and execution of test work (feasibility studies), capital projects and operational projects for process improvement, optimisation and automation.
  • Project Management & Total Quality Management of capital projects and Process Safety engineering.
  • Research & development, test work, feasibility studies & implementation of various successful chrome beneficiation technologies and separation processes.
  • Mentoring and coaching of Plant Coordinators.
  • Reviewing and updating Operational Procedures.
  • Labour Planning.
  • Implementing industry best practices and driving process safety excellence in all process designs, projects and builds.

Metallurgical Coordinator

Role Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Legally Appointed sub-ordinate Manager (MHSA Section 7(4) Regulation 2.9.2) for UG2 Chrome Recovery Plant – EPL Operation (Reporting to Production Superintendent MHSA 2.6.1).
  • Liaise with Senior Management and reporting on operational performance and related KPIs.
  • Coordinating all operational functions with internal and external stake holders and business partners.
  • Coordinate and overseeing the safe, efficient operation and maintenance of all metallurgical equipment and associated infrastructure and systems, such as: Spiral Plant, Magnet TTP, Thickener/ Water Treatment, cyclones, pumps, screens etc.
  • Ensuring site compliance to the Mine, Health and Safety Act (MHSA), Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Labour Relations Act (LRA) and Glencore Group Procedures and Standards.
  • Employing Total Quality Management principles to ensure the quality of saleable chrome products produced meets customer specification and oversee dispatch of final product to customer.
  • Conducting test work on from time to time.
  • Ensuring production volumes and unit costs are in line with budget forecasts and that expenditure is controlled and managed accordingly.
  • Ensuring that the Plant utilization is above 98%.
  • Ensuring that the Operation maintains its ISO14001 certification.
  • Managing capital applications and projects for EPL UG2 Plant.

Role Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Legally Appointed sub-ordinate Manager (MHSA Section 7(4) Regulation 2.9.2) for UG2 Chrome Recovery Plant: Performed this role at Wonderkop CRP, Rowland CRP and Eland CRP. (Reporting to Metallurgical Coordinator).
  • Leading shift, monitoring Plant production processes, quality control, product dispatches, performance monitoring and reporting.
  • Operational compliance to the Mine, Health and Safety Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act and Labour Relations Act and Glencore Group Procedures and Standards.

Accomplishments

  • Improved Eland Chrome Recovery Plant's performance from a Mass Yield of 2% to 11% in a period of 10 months, in 2011 - 2012 as an acting Metallurgical Coordinator.
  • In 2013 I was promoted to Metallurgical Coordinator.
  • Improved K4 UG2 Chrome Recovery Plant's performance from a Mass Yield of 18% to 23% in a period of 12 months, in 2013 - 2014.
  • Improved EPL UG2 Chrome Recovery Plant's performance from a Mass Yield of 15% to 37% in a period of 7 years and several capital projects, from 2016 - 2022.
  • Part of a Glencore delegation that went to China in 2017 to refine the R&D technologies utilized for fine chrome extraction via magnetic separation.
  • From 2016 - 2019 I co-managed and executed a R300mil capital project to design, construct and commission a First-In-Class Magnet Beneficiation Plant at EPL UG2, utilizing state of the art magnetic separation technology to extract chrome ultra fines from the Spiral Tailings stream.
  • From 2016 - 2023 I researched, studied, formulated, initiated and executed several optimisation projects on the magnetic and gravity separation circuits at EPL UG2 Plant to optimize the plant, looking at spiral stages, cyclones, screens, pumps and streamlining processes whilst employing better technologies, flowsheet improvements and energy saving initiatives.
  • In 2018 I decided to work on my tertiary qualifications and went back to University in order to improve my technical and theoretical knowledge of mineral processing and the engineering environment.
  • In 2022 I obtained my Advanced Diploma of Plant Engineering from EIT.
  • In 2023 I obtained my Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from Mancosa.
  • In February, 2023, I was promoted to Technical Superintendent of UG2 Operations.
  • 2023 to date I have worked on optimisation and capital projects across the UG2 portfolio.
  • In 2023 I have also managed replacement Capex Projects at EPL & Waterval West Plants to the value of R50mil to replace all metallurgical equipment such as spirals, screens, cyclones, launders, distributors etc.
  • Won best Metallurgical Coordinator - Western Chrome Mines, twice (2016 & 2018).
  • Won best Overall Achiever for Line Management staff - Western Chrome Mines, twice (2016 & 2018).
