  • 80 bed hospital is the only trauma facility in north Afghanistan catering for Kunduz city and surrounding areas.
  • The OT-3 operating rooms. One OR is dedicated for routine specialized Internal Fixation procedures such as Intra-Medullary Nailing, Plating and Screwing, Dynamic Hip Screws and also Pin Fixation.
  • The other two OR's are used for emergency trauma general Surgeries.
  • We did up to 15 -20 surgeries on daily basis which include between 5-10 new Emergency surgeries included neuro vascular, general and maxillo facial. All ages were admitted.
  • Types of trauma- bomb blasts, motor accidents; falls from buildings or walls collapsing; gunshots; knife stabs and other violent traumas.
  • A Post - Anaesthesia room where most patients were recovered. Only critical patients sent directly to ICU.
  • Supervising 25 nurses and 1 national supervisor.
  • Doing daily bedside training and weekly training for empowerment of National Staff in my department.

  • The Dorain Health Clinic was catering for the local population and patient load increased from 80 to 150 on a daily basis.
  • Cases treated ranged from common colds malaria, parasitosis, burns and injuries and more serious cases that needed hospitalisation were referred to ICRC facility IPD.
  • In the absence of ICRC expat staff we took care of patients admitted during nights and our referrals.

  • The OT has two operation rooms of which one was a dedicated strictly for IF procedures and the 2nd room for all emergency and general surgery.
  • I was supervising 20 nursing staff which included the national supervisor.
  • The Sterilization Room was also under my supervision and was staffed with 10 steri technicians and a supervisor.
  • Two months later Advanced Dressing Room setup and management was added to my duties.
  • This area proved very useful as many of our small procedure which required local anaesthesia was done here.
  • All rules as for OT applied here. Plus minus 300 procedures were carried out on monthly basis.
  • The main operations done in IF were Nailings, Platings and Screws Tension Band Wirings of upper and lower limb fractures.
  • In the 2nd Operating Room all emergency and soft tissue injuries and external fixations were done.
  • In IF room34procedures were done on a daily basis and in the second room between 8-10 procedures.
