  • I moved from the ward in 2020, from the 1st of September to Cath lab to experience a more specialized field.
  • I got to do probation over for 3 months where I had to learn to inject contrast, administer intravenous medication and scrub for Coronary Angiograms and Pacemakers.
  • I was found competent by the end of November 2020 and was scrubbing for Coronary Angiograms and Single/ Dual Chamber pacemakers.
  • I also assisted with Transoesophageal Echocardiograms monitoring patient during the procedure and handover of patient back to ward afterwards.
  • Learned as well how to charge equipment correctly and double check after each procedure the documentation because if something is not charged correctly the business loses money at the end of the day.
  • I also worked with Dr Gopal in the Electrophysiological Lab doing electrophysiological studies and pacemakers.
  • Got the opportunity to go overseas to New Orleans for Heart Rhythm Society conference as a learning experience in the Electrophysiology world.

  • After my contract ended by Bredasdorp Clinic I applied to the old age home and they recruited me to be part of the activity program for the residents and handing out of medication. I was also involved in the staff planning of the facility and part of the recruiting team for new members being appointed. I enjoyed working with the residents and created a special bond with them.

  • After my Community Service year I was struggling to find a job then I started by Bredasdorp Clinic where they offered me a 3 month contract which was extended till end July 2018.

  • Family planning administering of injections and insertion of implanons
  • Monitor for any children who are oustanding with their immunizations and catch them up with missed doses visiting their houses or calling the mothers to bring their children to the clinic.
  • Achievements: Being able to perform independently gaining the confidence to assess and treat children correctly and understand the BANC protocol better when assessing an antenatal patient. Became aware of missed immunizations and importance of children receiving them.
  • Reason For Leaving: Contract could not be extended no permanent post available employed a person qualified in Primary Health Care.

  • Start to my next six months by Otto Du Plessis Hospital during my Community Service year. I started working in Maternity Ward alongside a Enrolled Nursing Assistant where I had to deliver babies and identify the three stages of labor and care for the mother and child post natal. There were events where premature babies were born for which we had a KMC (Kangaroo mother care) room as well. When necessary for caesarean section I would accompany the mother to theatre and receive the baby once the doctor delivered the child and monitor the baby and apply the skin to skin principle within an hour although the mother is still on the theatre table baby has to be on mothers chest as it were the policy of skin to skin where mother and child are bonding.
  • I also worked in the trauma unit where we received various types of incidents that occurred in the community.

  • Delivering of babies in maternity ward
  • Post natal care of mother and child and prevention of post partum hemorrhage
  • Ensure skin to skin policy is maintained after third stage of labor
  • Suturing of lesions or wounds in trauma unit

  • Triage patients in trauma unit and sort them according to color and need

  • I started my first six months by Bredasdorp Clinic as a Professional Nurse recently qualified. I was sent on many training opportunities as I could only do antenatal bookings and post natal evaluations of mother and child.
  • I also did immunization of babies but could not yet perform IMCI on my own yet. When blood needed to be drawn I would also do that and go out with the Clinical Nurse Practitioners when handing out chronic medication of patients at different locations and draw blood when necessary.
